Book Review – Pearls Of Juggling

Pearlsofjuggling1

Pearls Of Juggling is a new book written by British juggler Anthony Trahair. The author, who now lives in Rome, Italy, took four years to research and reflect on the art of juggling and integrated his 21 years of juggling experience with his expertise in yoga and three years of study at the Dimitri Physical Theatre School in Switzerland.

The resulting book is quite unique. The book covers a vast array of subjects useful to a performing juggler without ever teaching a single trick. In fact, very little mention is made of specific juggling tricks at all. Many other books, videos, and other resources are available for learning specific tricks and types of juggling. Pearls Of Juggling, however, focuses on a wide variety of topics that other books rarely, if ever, mention. These topics include the following:

-The joy of juggling and its many benefits

-Creativity and inspiration

-Improving your training

-Juggling and movement

-Juggling and stopping (to stop or not to stop)

-Juggling and acting

-Juggling and comedy

-Drops, a juggler’s nightmare

-Music and musicality

-Sequences, routines, and whole shows

-Performing

-Taking a bow

Within each of those categories, subcategories on each subject are explored as well. The book is 142 pages long and filled with a plethora of ideas to explore. While the book does cover talking comedy juggling, the vast majority of the book is devoted to helping artistic. movement based jugglers. A variety of exercises are discussed to help jugglers create performances that use the stage space well and utilize acting, musicality, and characterization. Being a talking comedy juggler myself, I wasn’t aware of most of the content contained in the book, which was refreshing. I believe that this book could be a valuable resource to any performing jugglers and especially to jugglers who want to perform “artistic juggling.” Pearls Of Juggling has been published in both English and Italian versions. The book has a preface by Dave Finnigan. The book was published following a three month crowdfunding campaign.

Another wonderful reason to own Pearls Of Juggling is the great, original juggling-themed art work that is included throughout the book. Around 40 color illustrations created by students at the Scuola Internationale di Comics in Rome help make the book not only informative, but interesting to look at as well. The illustrations are done in a variety of styles and are impressive works of art. In fact, many of the illustrations were shown in a gallery setting at the release party of the book last year. Below are a few photos showing some of the artists with their illustrations from the book.
