My name is Michael Karas and I'm going to be running the IJA Individual Prop Competitions this year at the festival in Sparks, NV. The event will take place on Thursday from 3pm-5pm and there will be six competitions in which jugglers get 2 minutes to show off their skills:
3 balls
3 clubs
3 cigar boxes
1 devil/flower stick
1 diabolo
Alternate Prop
All of these are self-explanatory except for "alternate prop", which includes any other prop that is not included in the other 5 main competitions. Examples could include 3 rings, 3 shaker cups, 2 poi, 1 contact ball, 1 yo-yo, or any other prop (such as an RdL shape or an original design) as long as you are juggling its “base” number. Kendama is discouraged only because there will be a separate Kendama competition earlier in the week.
The competition will take place in the main gym on a raised temporary stage with normal fluorescent lighting. There is a $10 entrance fee per competition and prizes for 1st ($60), 2nd ($40), and 3rd ($20) place. You may enter one competition or all six. A competition requires at least two competitors. If there is not a third competitor in any category, the prize money remains the same.
There will be three judges who will evaluate your routine based on five categories:
1)Stage Presence (How comfortable is the competitor on stage with this prop?)
2)Trick Creativity (Does the competitor have original/creative tricks?)
3)Use of Music (How well does the music contribute to the style/mood of the piece?)
4)Technical Achievement (Is the competitor pushing themselves technically? Is there risk?)
5)Polish (Overall entertainment factor? Would you want to watch this routine again?)
You can score a 1 (low), 2 (medium), or 3 (high) in each of these categories. Drops deduct a half point (0.5) from your total score. The best score therefore you can receive is a perfect 15. The three scores from the judges will be averaged and the scores ordered to determine 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.
So…now that you understand the rules, it’s time to get involved! There is less than a week until the Individual Prop Competitions and I want all IJAers, from beginning to advanced, to sign up and participate.
All you have to do is choose a category and a music track you love. It can be on CD or iPod or iTunes. Do your best to keep your routine under 2 minutes as there will be a timekeeper. The clock will start running when your music starts and at 2 minutes, the timekeeper will say “time” and the judges will mark their final scores.
And remember…it’s ONLY 2 minutes! There’s no excuse not to get up and rock out for 2 minutes with your favorite prop! The crowd will be supportive and you’ll even get to be featured on the IJA Fest DVD.
No need to sign up before the fest – I will have a sign up table on Wednesday of the fest, although you may see me walking around with a clipboard prior to then, looking for a few good competitors.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to seeing you all at the IJA this summer. Matt Hall, the workshops coordinator and past IPC rockstar, has scheduled NO workshops during the IPC so if you’re not competing, you better show up and cheer on the competitors!
Good luck and see you in Sparks!
