I am 10 days into my 5-ball 'journey'.

Bit of a late learner, as I'm 27. I learned 3c and 4f at school, and then barely juggled for 10 years. When I did mess around with juggling during that time, it was certainly not practicing new stuff. Just messing about with 3 balls tbh.

As I said I started 10 days ago, maybe an hour a day. I limit myself to a fairly low ceiling, as I am not a big fan of 'high' juggling, and this is what I have found so far:

- Started by just getting a feel for what 3 balls in one hand feels like. Threw the balls up in the air in a chaotic fasion, just to get a feel for how fast the releases have to be. The first time you try this, it seem impossible to even get 5 releases done in time - even when you are not thinking about where they are going.

- I then switched back to 4 balls, and worked on 4 ball crossover flashes. My inbuilt 4-ball mechanism made me often throw certain balls 'straight upwards', rather than inwards at a cascade angle. I found it easier to pretend to myself I was doing a 3-ball cascade and then quickly adding a 4th ball afterwards. After two or three days, I got pretty solid at this.

- Within a week, I was working on 5-ball flashes. If I think hard about 3-cascade, 4th ball, 5th ball, it is ok. As soon as I'm not thinking about that specifically, the throws start going straight upwards again.

After 10 days my 5-ball flash success rate is maybe 40%-50%, including drops of the 5th ball due to being rubbish at catching with two balls already in a hand lol.

Like learning anything juggle-related 'hopeless' suddenly will show a flash of 'hope'. That moment when you first 'feel' the juggle. Even if it is just for 7 catches, and is never replicated that day, just for a moment you got a frame of reference for what the juggle is about. I think I did 8 catches once, and it gives you a boost that carries you through the next few days of collisions, drops, wild throws and obligatory 'walking forwards'.

Also, as also I have found with learning juggling stuff as a youngster time starts to slow down when you practice more. Releasing 5 balls isn't that frantic a task anymore, even with a low ceiling.

I think it's best to not run before you walk on 5-ball, so will discipline myself to only flash (or maybe 6 catch maximum) for the next two or three weeks.

Collision between my 4th and 5th ball is my problem 90% of the time where I fail, so I need to concentrate a lot on making sure I get my 4th ball well accross my body (rather than my natural instict to lob it straight up), so my 5th ball has a nice gap to get through.

Aim is to be able to 40-catch occasionally by my 28th birthday - 21st July. 5 months ^^

Normally I would have missed this, but my workplace was closed for a second consecutive snow day, so I was home watching TV. Patrick Dempsey was on the Ellen DeGeneres Show Thursday 2/11/10, and talked about placing second in the 1981 IJA Juniors competition in Cleveland, OH. Just last week, Ellen had Anthony Gatto on the show, coincidentally the guy who beat out Patrick for first place back in 1981.

I saw on rec.juggling that Anthony Gatto is going to be on the Ellen DeGeneres show Thursday, Feb. 4. I hope many can see him that day!

I went to her website which stated "if there were a gold medal for juggling, Anthony Gatto would have one!" Well, I recalled that he won juniors beating out Patrick Dempsey for the gold. Looking back on the IJA website I saw that gold medal win was in 1981 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Just to keep the record straight, I have emailed Ellen DeGeneres to let her know there is a gold medal of juggling and she can access the information verifying Anthony Gatto's gold medal win in juniors on the IJA website. I'll be listening to hear if she mentions the IJA. Will you?

[Juggling Chat] Re: How ling did 5 cascade take you?

I started working on five balls in April of 2009. Through daily practice, I had made runs of more than 100 catches. However, I didn't have good accuracy or consistency with my throws, resulting in a pattern that was far from solid. On my birthday in September 2009, I got Jason Garfield's Theory & Practice of Juggling DVD, which includes exercises with three and four balls that will improve technique for five. After going through the exercises, my five ball cascade now feels solid enough for me to start learning five ball tricks. So, to answer the question, getting solid with the five ball cascade took me about nine months of hard practice. If you want help with your five, I recommend you buy Jason Garfield's DVD.
