Jim: On the selfsame page I sent you in my last note (http://www.darrenruby.com/haag_history_details.htm), where I found a 1969 reference to "rola bola," I overlooked a slightly earlier reference (further up on the page) to "Balancing on a short plank on a cylinder." This reference comes from the show description of the 7th Annual Elf Khurafeh Shrine Circus, which is undated but is placed between two other shows dating from 1962.
Given that the 1962 reference omits the term "rola bola" and the 1969 reference includes it, I'd guess that places the coining of the term between '62 and '69. If so, the term itself isn't older than the Bongo Board (1953).
I haven't found a description of the plank-and-cylinder balance act that predates 1962, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be much older. I have to think as soon as small lengths of pipe became available, presumably early in the Age of Steam, somebody somewhere must have tried laying a plank across a pipe and climbing aboard.

I've been working on my 5-ball joggling for about a year. It really exposes any flaws you have in your 5-ball pattern. I'm lucky to get 100m without a drop. Barry told me he doesn't drop too much, but stops every 100 or 200m to make sure there are no obstacles ahead. Incidendally, Barry also told me he has run a 6-ball 5K (he actually had to walk most of it because it was crowded). Billy Gillen did some 7-ball joggling in the late '80s, and is the only known joggler to do 5 balls for an entire marathon following the "joggling every step of the way" rule. It took him over seven hours, and he had to finish it in the dark, on the sidewalk, after the race course had officially shut down.

I haven't heard about a 5-ball mile, but that would be a great race to watch.

1- Are here some 5-balls jogglers???
2- Do you have some personal records for different distances?
3- What is your average d/km (drop per km)?

I had a first real try last week and joggled about 200 m without drop. The big problem are the track-turns because you can’t really see what’s happening in front of you.

So – to be honest – I have some problems to believe that Barry Goldmeier run the 5 km without stopping joggling and I would like to know if this is a real joggling-record or just a mix of joggling and running.

I heard, that Barry Goldmeier run the 5 km 5 balls in 27:53. Is this right? Did he run on a 400 m track? I think it’s very difficult because you have to juggle very high and can't see the turns. Does someone know how many drops he had on those 5 km??? And finally: does someone know his average “drop per km” on an 10km or marathon with 5 balls?

I learned to juggle out of juggling for the complete klutz when I was maybe 13 years old (I'm 18 now). I didn't really work solid, but after a year or so I could juggle 4 balls. After that I tried working on 5 for a while but I ended up giving it up in favor of yoyoing, penspinning, and other non-toss juggling manipulations. I didn't really start up again until last summer when I found out that there was a local juggling club. I successfully flashed 5 balls my first day there and it wasn't long after that I got my first qualify.
If you are not already going to a club, I suggest you look for one on the juggling db. That's how I found mine. You will get so much good out of going to a club, you wouldn't believe it.
As for giving up, I certainly can't suggest that. If you have other priorities and you have to (or choose to) brush juggling to the side in favor of something else, that's one thing. But don't settle for less than what you can do. I have confidence that if you put in the work (and let a few 5 ballers see you so they can tell you what you're doing), you will reap the reward in the end. I wish you the best of luck, and the steady growth of your skill. Have fun

hmmm .... a month and a half without an answer ... what does that mean?

Here is a second question you can not answer: what were the early pre-registration numbers now that we are past the cutoff?

I was trying to correct the formatting. I guess I tripped up something else. I'll look into it.

It's fixed now.

Not going to IJA.

I don't personally know any other jogglers in California, or in any other state.
I'm will joggle some more races, keeping my eyes open for other jogglers!

Perry,

It will be great to meet you. We'll have to get together after the joggling races.

I haven't decided which events to focus on yet. I'm just coming back from a running injury that kept me sidelined for most of this year. But I was able to joggle a no drop 5k in 20 minutes last week.

I really wish I could get more people interested in Joggling, but I've been striking out down here in JAX, FL. I even offered to do a free juggling/joggliing clinic for our local track club, and I was turned down!

Glad to hear you ran your first 5k!

One of the facts of joggling is that when you speed up, the balls that are already in the air do not speed up. So you must accelerate gradually when you are joggling.

I've made that same mistake myself.

Are you going to IJA?

Is there any interest in Joggling in CA? I live in Jacksonville, FL and I am striking out trying to get the running to community or the juggling community to consider the greatest sport in the world: Joggling. It's really their loss. But I'll keep trying.
