Four person patterns old and new

Rotating ymovement and passes for rotating yThe jugglers stand in a y formation. Everyone passes on four count. Adam always passes to Chris, Chris passes to Brenda, Brenda passes to Diane, and Diane passes to Adam. In the diagram the red arrows show the passes, the green arrows show how the jugglers walk after each pass.
At the start Adam is at the base of the y, Brenda is in the centre of the y, and Chris and Diane are at the top of the arms of the y. After each pass Adam and Brenda walk around on one circle anti-clockwise, and Chris and Diane walk around another circle anti-clockwise.
For the second pass Chris is at the base of the y, Diane is at the centre of the y, and Brenda and Adam are at the top of the arms of the y.
For the third pass Brenda is at the base of the y, Adam is in the centre of the y, and Chris and Diane are at the top of the arms of the y.
For the fourth pass Diane is at the base of the y, Chris is at the centre of the y, and Brenda and Adam are at the top of the arms of the y. The pattern then repeats.
If you haven’t tried this pattern before, you should practice each of the four positions without walking to the next position. Also when you try to rotate the pattern, if you find it hard to do on four count, you should try doing it on six count.animation of the rotating y
Sticky trianglemovement and passes for sticky triangleTo do this pattern use some juggling balls to mark out the corners of a triangle on the floor. Everyone passes on four count.
At the start Adam and Brenda each stand at one corner of the triangle. Chris stands at the midpoint of one side of the triangle, between Brenda and the empty corner. Diane stands at the midpoint between Adam and the empty corner of the triangle. Adam passes with Brenda, and Chris passes with Diane. After this pass, Diane moves to the empty corner of the triangle, Adam moves to the point where Diane was standing, and Chris walks across the triangle to the empty midpoint. Brenda does not move after the first pass.
For the second pass, Adam passes with Chris, and Brenda passes with Diane. After this pass, Chris moves to the empty corner of the triangle, Brenda moves to the point where Chris was standing, and Adam walks across the triangle to the empty midpoint. Diane does not move after the second pass.
For the third pass, Adam passes with Brenda, and Chris passes with Diane. After this pass, Adam moves to the empty corner of the triangle, Diane moves to the point where Adam was standing, and Brenda walks across the triangle to the empty midpoint. Chris does not move after the third pass.
For the fourth pass, Adam passes with Chris, and Brenda passes with Diane. At this point the jugglers are in the same formation that they started the pattern, except now Adam has taken on Brenda’s role, Brenda has taken on Diane’s role, Chris has taken on Adam’s role, and Diane has taken on Chris’s role.
There are some simple rules to help you with this pattern:
When you’re at a corner, you pass to the other person who’s at a corner.
When you’re at a midpoint, you pass to the other person who’s at a midpoint.
When you arrive at a corner you make two passes before you move off again.
When you do walk the movement is ‘corner, midpoint, midpoint, corner’.animation of the sticky triangle
The weavemovement and passes for the weaveAdam does a sweep feed on two count. He passes left, middle, right, middle, and then the pattern repeats. Everyone else passes to Adam on six count while walking in a figure of eight pattern. They pass to Adam when they’re walking forward through the middle of the pattern, and when they’re walking backwards on each side of the pattern.
Adam’s first pass is with Diane as she walks backwards on his left. Brenda starts with two self throws, and Chris starts with four self throws.
Adam’s second pass is with Brenda as she walks forwards through the middle of the pattern. After this pass Brenda walks to her right (Adam’s left).
Adam’s third pass is with Chris as Chris walks backwards on Adam’s right.
Adam’s fourth pass is with Diane as she walks forwards through the middle of the pattern. After this pass Diane walks to her left (Adam’s right).
Adam’s fifth pass is with Brenda as she walks backwards on his left. At this point the jugglers are in the same formation that they started the pattern, except now Brenda has taken on Diane’s role, Chris has taken on Brenda’s role, and Diane has taken on Chris’s role.
This pattern is easier if the feeder calls out each person’s name as he passes to them. This helps everyone keep to the same rhythm. Also you can use coloured clubs so that Adam passes red clubs with Diane, blue clubs with Brenda, and green clubs with Chris.animation of the weave
Havana feedmovement and passes for Havana feedThis is a variation of the weave where the feeder changes after five passes. Like the weave you do two count when you’re feeding and six count when you’re not feeding. The first five passes of this pattern are just like the weave, except Chris does not move. After the first two passes Diane and Brenda swap positions, with Diane moving backwards on the edge of the pattern and Brenda moving forwards through the middle of the pattern as before.
After the fifth pass, Chris becomes the new feeder. So when Diane passes with Adam in the middle of the pattern, she turns left to face Chris. Chris’s first pass as the feeder is with Adam, then Adam does six count. After Chris passes with Diane, Adam and Diane swap positions. Adam moves backwards at the edge of the pattern and Diane moves forwards through the middle of the pattern. Brenda does not move while Chris is the feeder.
Once Chris has made five passes as the feeder, Brenda becomes the new feeder. So when Adam passes with Chris in the middle of the pattern, he turns left to face Brenda. Brenda’s first pass as the feeder is with Chris, then Chris does six count. After Brenda passes with Adam, Adam and Chris swap positions. Chris moves backwards at the edge of the pattern and Adam moves forwards through the middle of the pattern. Diane does not move while Brenda is the feeder.
Once Brenda has made five passes as the feeder, Diane becomes the new feeder. At this point the jugglers are in the same formation that they started the pattern, except now Adam has taken on Chris’s role, Brenda has taken on Diane’s role, Chris has taken on Brenda’s role, and Diane has taken on Adam’s role.
There is a saying that goes with this pattern: ‘turn left at Havana’. When you get to the middle of the pattern, you always turn left after passing with the old feeder in order to face the new feeder.animation of the Havana feed
Interlocking weavesmovement and passes for interlocking weaveAlthough the Havana feed is based on the weave, there is no weaving movement in the pattern. This is a variation on the Havana feed which does have weaving! In this pattern the feeder changes after four passes. Also two of the jugglers do a reverse weave – they pass as they go backwards through the middle of the pattern. Like the weave you do two count when you’re feeding and six count when you’re not feeding.
The first four passes of this pattern are just like the weave, except in the diagram Adam starts by passing to his right.
Adam’s first pass is with Brenda as she walks backwards on his right. Chris starts with two self throws, and Diane starts with four self throws.
Adam’s second pass is with Chris as Chris walks forwards through the middle of the pattern. After this pass Chris walks to his left (Adam’s right).
Adam’s third pass is with Diane as she walks backwards on Adam’s left.
Adam’s fourth pass is with Brenda as she walks forwards through the middle of the pattern. After this pass Brenda walks to her right (Adam’s left). Now Chris becomes the new feeder.
Chris’s first pass as the feeder is with Adam as Adam walks forwards on Chris’s left.
Chris’s second pass is with Diane as she walks backwards through the middle of the pattern. After this pass Diane walks to her right (Chris’s left).
Chris’s third pass is with Brenda as she walks forwards on Chris’s left.
Chris’s fourth pass is with Adam as Adam walks backwards through the middle of the pattern. After this pass Adam walks to his left (Chris’s right). Now Diane becomes the new feeder. At this point the jugglers are in the same formation that they started the pattern, except now Adam has taken on Diane’s role, Brenda has taken on Chris’s role, Chris has taken on Brenda’s role, and Diane has taken on Adam’s role.animation of the interlocking weave
Sticky weavemovement and passes for sticky weaveWhen I made the animation for the interlocking weave pattern, I noticed that as they walked the jugglers passed through the formation for sticky triangle. This suggested that there was a new pattern there! In this pattern the jugglers make the same movement as they do in the interlocking weave pattern, but they all pass on four count. Although the movement is the same as the interlocking weave pattern, the jugglers don’t face the same way that they do in that pattern, so I think this pattern will feel very different.
This pattern starts just like sticky triangle. After this pass, Diane moves to the empty corner of the triangle, Chris walks across the triangle to the empty midpoint and turns to face Brenda, and Brenda moves to the point where Chris was standing. Adam does not move after the first pass.
For the second pass, Adam passes with Diane, and Brenda passes with Chris. After this pass, Chris moves to the empty corner of the triangle, Brenda walks across the triangle to the empty midpoint and turns to face Diane, and Diane moves to the point where Brenda was standing. Adam does not move after the second pass.
For the third pass, Adam passes with Chris, and Brenda passes with Diane. After this pass, Brenda moves to the empty corner of the triangle, Adam walks towards Chris to the empty midpoint and turns to face Diane, and Diane moves to the point where Brenda was standing. Chris does not move after the third pass.
For the fourth pass, Adam passes with Diane, and Brenda passes with Chris. After this pass, Diane moves to the empty corner of the triangle, Brenda walks towards Chris to the empty midpoint and turns to face Adam, and Adam moves to the point where Diane was standing. Chris does not move after the fourth pass.
For the fifth pass Adam passes with Brenda, and Chris passes with Diane. At this point the jugglers are in the same formation that they started the pattern, except now Adam has taken on Diane’s role, Brenda has taken on Chris’s role, Chris has taken on Brenda’s role, and Diane has taken on Adam’s role.animation of the sticky weave
Lazy rotating y

When I made the animation for the sticky triangle pattern, I noticed that as they walked the jugglers passed through the formation for the y. This suggested that there was a new pattern there! In this pattern the jugglers make the same movement as they do in the sticky triangle, but they pass as they do in the y. Everyone passes on four count. Adam always passes to Chris, Chris passes to Brenda, Brenda passes to Diane, and Diane passes to Adam. However on the right hand beats where the jugglers pass in sticky triangle, they make self throws in this y pattern, and vice-versa. animation of the sticky yJoePass shows that this pattern is possible, but I can give no better instructions than those above! Fortunately you can perform almost the same pattern based on the movement from the Havana feed.

The jugglers stand in a y formation. Everyone passes on four count. In this pattern you don’t always pass to the same person! After each pass Adam moves around the outside of the pattern in an anti-clockwise direction, and everyone else moves in a clockwise direction.
At the start Adam is at the base of the y, Brenda is in the centre of the y, and Chris and Diane are at the top of the arms of the y. Adam passes to Chris, Chris passes to Brenda, Brenda passes to Diane, and Diane passes to Adam.
For the second pass Adam is at the base of the y, Chris is in the centre of the y, and Brenda and Diane are at the top of the arms of the y. Adam passes to Diane, Chris passes to Brenda, Brenda passes to Diane, and Diane passes to Chris.
For the third pass Adam is at the base of the y, Diane is in the centre of the y, and Brenda and Chris are at the top of the arms of the y. Adam passes to Brenda, Chris passes to Adam, Brenda passes to Adam, and Diane passes to Chris.
For the fourth pass Adam is at the base of the y, Brenda is in the centre of the y, and Chris and Diane are at the top of the arms of the y. Adam passes to Chris, Chris passes to Brenda, Brenda passes to Diane, and Diane passes to Adam.
For the fifth pass Adam is at the base of the y, Chris is in the centre of the y, and Brenda and Diane are at the top of the arms of the y. Adam passes to Diane, Chris passes to Brenda, Brenda passes to Diane, and Diane passes to Chris.
For the sixth pass Adam is at the base of the y, Diane is in the centre of the y, and Brenda and Chris are at the top of the arms of the y. Adam passes to Brenda, Chris passes to Adam, Brenda passes to Adam, and Diane passes to Chris. The pattern then repeats.animation of the Australian rotating yThere are many patterns you could try that combine the rotating y variations I have described here!
