Karamazov shuffle and variations

mixed feed

The Karamazov shuffle is a four person moving pattern created by the Flying Karamazov Brothers. It’s based on a four person mixed feed. Four jugglers stand in a square formation. Alexei and Pavel are facing Dmitri and Zossima. Each juggler passes on two count and four count with the two jugglers facing them.causal diagram for mixed feed

For Alexei and Zossima the pattern is: pass self self self pass self pass self, and for Dmitri and Pavel it’s: pass self pass self pass self self self. Essentially the same pattern, but starting in a different place.

Karazamov shuffle

In the Karazamov shuffle, the passing is the same as the mixed feed, but Alexei and Pavel walk around each other on one circle, and Dmitri and Zossima walk around each other on another circle.digram of passes and movement for the karazamov shuffle

For the first pass, Alexei passes with Dmitri, and Pavel passes with Zossima. After this pass, Alexei and Zossima walk backwards and to their right, whereas Dmitri and Pavel walk forwards and to their left.

For the second pass, Dmitri passes with Pavel. At this point, Alexei and Zossima are doing four count and so they don’t pass. After this pass, Dmitri and Pavel walk backwards and to their left, whereas Alexei and Zossima walk forwards and to their right.

For the third pass, Alexei passes with Dmitri, and Pavel passes with Zossima. After this pass, Alexei and Zossima walk forwards and to their left, whereas Dmitri and Pavel walk backwards and to their right.

For the fourth pass, Alexei passes with Zossima. At this point, Dmitri and Pavel are doing four count and so they don’t pass. After this pass, Dmitri and Pavel walk forwards and to their right, whereas Alexei and Zossima walk backwards and to their left.

The whole pattern then repeats.

Pistons

If you find the Karamazov shuffle a bit tricky, you could try missing out the two count throws. The problem with this is that you end up always passing with the same person. If the jugglers start at a different point on their circles this problem goes away!diagram of passes and movement for pistons

In this pattern, it’s easier to think of the jugglers walking around on a square. So Alexei and Pavel walk around each other on one square, and Dmitri and Zossima walk around each other on another square. At the start, Alexei and Pavel start at opposite corners of their square, and Dmitri and Zossima start at opposite corners of their square. Alexei faces Zossima, and Dmitri faces Pavel. Everyone passes on four count.

For the first pass, Alexei passes with Dmitri, and Pavel passes with Zossima. After the first pass, Alexei walks forward, Pavel walks backwards, Zossima walks to his right, and Dmitri walks to his left.

For the second pass, Alexei passes with Zossima, and Dmitri passes with Pavel. After the second pass, Alexei walks to his right, Pavel walks to his left, Zossima walks forward, and Dmitri walks backwards.

For the third pass, Alexei passes with Dmitri, and Pavel passes with Zossima. After the third pass, Alexei walks backwards, Pavel walks forward, Zossima walks to his left, and Dmitri walks to his right.

For the fourth pass, Alexei passes with Zossima, and Dmitri passes with Pavel. After the fourth pass, Alexei walks to his left, Pavel walks to his right, Zossima walks backwards, and Dmitri walks forward.

The whole pattern then repeats.

animation of pistons

You may have noticed that the jugglers walk anti-clockwise in the Karamazov shuffle, whereas Alexei and Pavel walk clockwise in pistons.

Pistons crossed with trapeze

This is a variation on pistons. Dmitri and Zossima start on the corners of their square that are empty at the start of pistons. The passes for this variation are the same as the passes in pistons. This means that each pair of passes cross, which is quite a nice effect (when they don’t collide)!diagram of passes and movement for trapeze

For the first pass, Alexei passes with Zossima, and Dmitri passes with Pavel. After the first pass, Alexei walks to his right, Pavel walks to his left, Zossima walks backwards, and Dmitri walks forward.

For the second pass, Alexei passes with Dmitri, and Pavel passes with Zossima. After the second pass, Alexei walks forward, Pavel walks backwards, Zossima walks to his right, and Dmitri walks to his left.

For the third pass, Alexei passes with Zossima, and Dmitri passes with Pavel. After the third pass, Alexei walks to his left, Pavel walks to his right, Zossima walks forward, and Dmitri walks backwards.

For the fourth pass, Alexei passes with Dmitri, and Pavel passes with Zossima. After the fourth pass, Alexei walks backwards, Pavel walks forward, Zossima walks to his left, and Dmitri walks to his right.

The whole pattern then repeats.

Note that everyone walks in an anti-clockwise direction in this pattern.

There are other interesting ways of crossing pistons with trapeze!

Dosado

This pattern starts just like the Karamazov shuffle. The four jugglers stand in a square with Alexei and Dmitri facing Pavel and Zossima.diagram of passes and movement for dosado

For the first pass, Alexei passes with Pavel, and Dmitri passes with Zossima. After this pass, Alexei and Zossima walk forwards and to their left.

For the second pass, Alexei passes with Pavel, and Dmitri passes with Zossima. After this pass, Alexei and Zossima keep walking in the same direction, but turn clockwise. So Alexei turns to face Dmitri, and Zossima turns to face Pavel.

For the third pass, Alexei passes with Dmitri, and Pavel passes with Zossima. After this pass, Dmitri and Pavel walk forwards and to their right.

For the fourth pass, Alexei passes with Dmitri, and Pavel passes with Zossima. After this pass, Dmitri and Pavel keep walking in the same direction, but turn anti-clockwise. So Dmitri turns to face Zossima, and Pavel turns to face Alexei.

For the fifth pass Alexei passes with Pavel, and Dmitri passes with Zossima. At this point, the jugglers are in the same formation that they started, except Alexei has taken on Zossima’s role and vice-versa, and Dmitri has taken on Pavel’s role and vice-versa.animation for dosado

Cyclone

In this pattern Alexei and Dmitri walk round clockwise on one oval path, whereas Pavel and Zossima walk round anti-clockwise on another oval path, which overlaps the first one!diagram of passes and movement for the cyclone

At the start the four jugglers stand in a square with Alexei and Zossima facing Dmitri and Pavel.

For the first pass, Alexei passes with Pavel, and Dmitri passes with Zossima. After this pass, Alexei and Dmitri move to their left, whereas Pavel and Zossima move backwards and to their right.

For the second pass, Alexei passes with Dmitri. Pavel and Zossima are doing four count and so they don’t pass. After this pass, Alexei and Dmitri move to their left, whereas Pavel and Zossima move forwards and to their right.

For the third pass, Alexei passes with Pavel, and Dmitri passes with Zossima. After this pass, Alexei and Dmitri move to their left, whereas Pavel and Zossima move to their right.

For the fourth pass, Pavel passes with Zossima. Alexei and Dmitri are doing four count and so they don’t pass. After this pass, Alexei and Dmitri move to their left, whereas Pavel and Zossima move forwards and to their right.

For the fifth pass Alexei passes with Zossima, and Dmitri passes with Pavel. After this pass, Alexei and Dmitri move backwards and to their left, whereas Pavel and Zossima move to their right.

For the sixth pass Pavel passes with Zossima. Alexei and Dmitri are doing four count and so they don’t pass. After this pass, Alexei and Dmitri move forwards and to their left, whereas Pavel and Zossima move to their right.

For the seventh pass Alexei passes with Zossima, and Dmitri passes with Pavel. After this pass, Alexei and Dmitri move forwards and to their left, whereas Pavel and Zossima move to their right.

For the eighth pass Alexei passes with Dmitri. Pavel and Zossima are doing four count and so they don’t pass. After this pass, Alexei and Dmitri move to their left, whereas Pavel and Zossima move backwards and to their right.

For the ninth pass Alexei passes with Pavel, and Dmitri passes with Zossima. At this point, the jugglers are in the same formation that they started, except Alexei has taken on Dmitri’s role and vice-versa, and Pavel has taken on Zossima’s role and vice-versa.

If you find it difficult walking and passing two count, you could miss out the two count throws!

Seattle shuffle

This variation was created by some Seattle jugglers, hence the name.

At the start the four jugglers stand in a square with Alexei and Dmitri facing Pavel and Zossima.diagram of passes and movement for seattle shuffle

For the first pass, Alexei passes with Zossima, and Dmitri passes with Pavel. After this pass, Alexei and Pavel move forwards and to their left.

For the second pass, Dmitri passes with Zossima. Alexei and Pavel are doing four count and so they don’t pass. After this pass, Alexei and Pavel continue moving left and turn to face each other.

For the third pass, Alexei passes with Pavel. Dmitri and Zossima are doing four count and so they don’t pass. After this pass, Alexei and Pavel move left and keep turning.

For the fourth pass, Dmitri passes with Zossima. Alexei and Pavel are doing four count and so they don’t pass. After this pass, Alexei and Pavel move backwards and to their left.

For the fifth pass the jugglers are in a square formation again and Alexei passes with Zossima, and Dmitri passes with Pavel. After this pass, it’s Dmitri and Zossima’s turn to move. Dmitri and Zossima move forwards and to their left.

For the sixth pass Alexei passes with Pavel. Dmitri and Zossima are doing four count and so they don’t pass. After this pass, Dmitri and Zossima continue moving left and turn to face each other.

For the seventh pass Dmitri passes with Zossima. Alexei and Pavel are doing four count and so they don’t pass. After this pass, Dmitri and Zossima move left and keep turning.

For the eighth pass Alexei passes with Pavel. Dmitri and Zossima are doing four count and so they don’t pass. After this pass, Dmitri and Zossima move backwards and to their left.

For the ninth pass the jugglers are in a square formation again and Alexei passes with Zossima, and Dmitri passes with Pavel.

The whole pattern then repeats.

Aidan in Seattle

This is an ambidextrous variation of the Seattle shuffle. When you’re standing still, you pass on three count instead of two count and four count. When you’re walking you make two passes on four count instead of one.animation for variation of seattle shuffle

  1. Thanks for the excellent article.

I learned the first pattern as a three-person “windshield-wiper” feed with an imaginary person off the end as the third person. For example, Red feeds yellow, blue, self, blue, yellow, … and the self is to the imaginary person to the left of blue. The same logic can be extended to longer facing lines of jugglers.
