2019 IJA Fest Preview

As the 2019 IJA Festival Director, I wanted to take another opportunity to share with you all of the wonderful things that will be happening at this year’s event. There will be many workshops happening each day that aren’t listed here, but the schedule can be viewed by clicking here. Let’s take a look at each day’s schedule of events.

Monday, June 24th, 2019

The gym opens at 9 am. Juggle, say hi to your friends, and get settled in.

Challenge Night 7:30 pm – Gym – Try to juggle some of the weirdest and most difficult juggling props ever created or try a large group juggling pattern to set a new world record. Some the weird props you can try out include: Floaty Clubs, Chaos Clubs, Mega Clubs, Chaos Rings, Slippery Clubs, Apple Seeds, and Foam Peanuts. We will also attempt a Mega Club Passing Feed and the world’s largest drop back circle.

 

Tuesday, June 25th, 2019

X-Juggling – 1 pm – Anthony Wayne Ballroom –  X-Juggling is the fast paced, non-stop, best trick competition. This is about pushing the limits of creativity and possibility. You’ll see some of the best jugglers in the world pull off their most incredible, insane, cutting-edge tricks — or crash and burn. Sign ups take place the day of the competition.

Anti-Gravity Juggling Revue – 7:30 pm Embassy Theatre – This welcome show features high quality talent and humor from American and international performers, including Aaron Bonk, Dominique Rabideau, The Kalvan Family, Tony Steinbach, and three of the UK’s brightest juggling stars, Steve Rawlings, Jon Udry, and Matthew Tiffany. Tickets to this show are included in the festival Event Package or can be purchased separately at the fest.

Juggling Film Festival – 11 pm – Anthony Wayne Ballroom – It’s a night at the movies as juggling-themed short films make their debut and a winner is chosen by the audience. We will also be showing videos and doing the Awards Presentations for the Historical Achievement Award and Award of Excellence at the film festival. This is one of the two events at the fest not included in the events package. Tickets are $10 at the registration desk or at the door. As a bonus, if time allows, we will also be showing one or two historical videos so secret that we aren’t even allowed to say what they are!!

Wednesday, June 26th, 2019

Individual Prop Competition – 1 pm – Anthony Wayne Ballroom – In this competition, jugglers will perform single-prop routines to music of their choice and be judged on technique, presentation and choreography. This year there will be three individual prop competitions: 3 clubs, 3 rings, and 3 balls. Each event will have a 90-second time limit. Not open to competitors using the same prop in any of the Stage Championships (Juniors, Individuals and Teams). Sign-Ups: Matt Hall is the Individual Prop Competition director and will be conducting sign-ups at the IJA Festival. ENTRY FEE: $15 PER EVENT to compete.

Annual IJA General Meeting – 3pm – Anthony Wayne Ballroom – Meet the IJA Board candidates and learn the most recent happenings in the IJA! Do you love the IJA organization and want to learn more about how it is run and where it is heading? Then we want you at this meeting!

Voting for 2019-2021 Board Members will take place just before, during, and just following the meeting.

Go With The Flow Juggling Show – 7:30 pm – Embassy Theatre – Watch some of the best flow artists at the fest share their amazing talents. Performers include Chris Kelly, Lily Gerstner, Tesla Naes, Abigail Lindsey, Kyle Owen, Matan Presberg, Mike Hayataka, Kimberly Bucki, Brain Thompson, and Jeremy Jay-j Camacho.  Tickets to this show are included in the festival Event Package or can be purchased separately at the fest.

Renegade – 11 pm – Courtyard by Marriott – The late night cabaret of the IJA, offering more adult-theme entertainment in a bar-like setting. A wild and raucous late night show where anything goes! Sign up to perform or sit back and get ready to laugh!

Brunch – 10:30 am to noon – Courtyard by Marriott Hotel Ballroom – Thanks once again to the kindness and wisdom of our anonymous donor iiWii (whoever it is knows that jugglers like to eat), there will be a hot brunch taking place Thursday – Saturday, 10:30 am to noon. Brunch vouchers are included with all Early Bird and Advanced Festival Event Registrations and can be purchased on-site for others.

Albert Lucas Demo and Q & A – 1 pm – Anthony Wayne Ballroom – Watch and listen to Albert Lucas as he celebrates his 50th anniversary of his first IJA Festival. Albert will be juggling, answering questions, and showing some videos from his career.

Juggling History Q & A – 4 pm – Anthony Wayne Ballroom – Join David Cain and other juggling history experts for a lively discussion of juggling history.

Juniors, Teams, and Individuals Stage Championships – 7:30 pm – Embassy Theatre – Come enjoy this prestigious international competition recognizing top-level entertainment by offering medals and prize money for juggling performances. These performers have passed a preliminary round of judging and have been selected to showcase their talents live in the finals competition. Tickets to this show are included in the festival Event Package or can be purchased separately at the fest. Below is a list of this year’s competitors.

Silent Auction – Noon to 2 pm – Gym – During this first day of the Silent Auction, put your bids in for amazing treasures including a signed Anthony Gatto ring, a set of antique juggling hoops, Harry Lind clubs,  Thom’s Wall’s latest book, and many other items. The Silent Auction continues on Saturday from 11 am to 12:30 pm.

Numbers Championships – 1 pm – Anthony Wayne Ballroom – The competitors in the IJA Numbers Championships challenge each other as well as all past Numbers champions — and the laws of physics! See who can successfully juggle, individually and in teams, the greatest numbers of balls, clubs, rings and bounced balls. Cash prizes will be awarded, including a special prize for breaking IJA Numbers records. This year will feature possibly the best line up of competitors ever, including at least one current world record holder. ENTRY FEE: $15 PER EVENT for competitors.

 

Fight Night Prelims – 4 pm – Anthony Wayne Ballroom – Fight night is a one-on-one, three club combat juggling sport with only one simple rule: The last person juggling wins! This is an internationally ranked competition that happens at juggling festivals and conventions around the world. We are excited to once again host the IJA Fight Night Combat. This will be the first round of fights to get into the finals that happen at 11 pm.

Game Show Night – 7:30 pm – Anthony Wayne Ballroom – What do the Passing Zone, Matan Presberg, Taylor Glenn, Zac McAllister, Shivalla Schwab, Scott Cain, Chuck Clark, Brian Koenig, Sofia Noethe, Ben Hestness, and Nathan Wakefield all have in common? They will all be a part of the first ever IJA Game Show Night. And if you’re lucky enough to be chosen, you could be a part of the fun as well, but you have to be in the audience for that to happen. Don’t miss out on this brand new event. This is one of the two events at the fest not included in the events package. Tickets are $5 at the registration desk or at the door.

Saturday, June 29th, 2019

Joggling World Championships – 8 am to noon – Purdue University (Fort Wayne) Field House – The IJA Festival will once again feature the IJA Joggling World Championships. Get ready to give your body and brain an amazing workout with this competition that exercises all four limbs simultaneously!
This years’ joggling event will feature:

1000 meter 3 ball – limited entrants by speed
60 meter 3 ball
60 meter 5 ball (best of two tries)
60 meter 7 ball (best of two tries)
200 meter 3 ball
200 meter 5 ball
600 meter 3 ball
1 mile record attempt** (potential event)
4 x 200 meter 3 ball relay

Each event will have separate categories for males and females and separate divisions for 12 and under, 13-17, 18-39, 40 and above. ENTRY FEE: $25 FOR ALL EVENTS

Joggling

Silent Auction – 11 am to 12:30 pm – Gym – During this final day of the Silent Auction, put your bids in for amazing treasures including a signed Anthony Gatto ring, a set of antique juggling hoops, Harry Lind clubs,  Thom’s Wall’s latest book, and many other items.

Games of the IJA – 1 pm – Gym – The IJA Games are always a highlight of the festival! Endurance games, Simon Says, soap juggling, wheelbarrow racing, handstand endurance, unicycle gladiators – all these and more are options for this year’s games. All fest attendees are invited to play!

Big Toss Up Photo – 3:30 pm – Gym – Join in the tradition where all attendees gather and juggle together at once for the photo opportunity.

Cascade of Stars Show – 7:30 pm – Embassy Theatre –  The Cascade of Stars is a highlight of the IJA festival. This Saturday evening performance will feature top notch juggling and circus talent from around the world. This will be the final theater show of the festival and is an event not to be missed! Get ready for a fabulous night of family entertainment. Performers include Matt Hall, Bob Cates, Liam Halstead, Anni Kupper, Kathrin Wagner, Steve Rawlings, Jon Udry, Matthew Tiffany, Jack Kalvan, Chris Kelly, and Jack Denger.

With all of the standard events, the return of Fight Night, and the addition of Challenge Night, the Juggling Film Festival, Game Show Night, and the Silent Auction, this IJA Festival will offer more opportunities than ever before to have fun and get involved. Even if you can’t make it to the entire festival, I hope you come out for as many days as you can. It’s going to be a blast.

David Cain is a professional juggler, juggling historian, and the owner of the world's only juggling museum, the Museum of Juggling History. He is a Guinness world record holder and 15 time IJA gold medalist. In addition to his juggling pursuits, David is a successful composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and singer as well as the author of twenty three books. He and his children live in Middletown, OH (USA).
