This story is amazing and synonymous with commitment, courage and heroism. Marium Akther is a girl who must be remembered for her great heart, enthusiasm, and desire to help all people, among other qualities. Marium, for some women in Pakistan, is a martyr, always fighting for the rights of women, against Jihadist terrorism and for gender equality. I must thank José Vega, who spoke to me about this case, Shellie White Light and Marium’s father, Mr. Akhter Jawed, who helped me with all the information, images and videos to write this article.
Marium Akther
Marium, better known as ‘Wonder Marium,’ was born on June 22, 1996, in Karachi, Pakistan. From the age of 6, her father taught her to turn a large hoop around her waist and from that moment Marium had already thought about her future. Her father is deaf, yet he trained more than 4,000 girls to play with the hula hoop despite his disability.
Marium’s family was poor, but they did not let themselves be overcome by the obstacles of life and they overcame many difficulties. Marium and her father even raised enough money to make 4,000 hula hoops to teach all the girls, boys and women of Pakistan. Although in Pakistan it is forbidden for women to do any recreational activity or to be on television without permission from their husbands or guardians (no matter how old the woman is), Marium performed hundreds of street shows, corporate events, and appeared on television several times. She has more than 50 national awards and certifications and even participated in the inauguration of the National Olympic Games in Pakistan.

Marium was recognized in the world for her anti-terrorist struggle through hula hooping, peace, brotherhood and love; this made Marium win both followers and enemies due to her liberal views towards traditional laws in her community.
“I’m working on my mission: peace through hooping, changing the minds of old thinkers through the use of hooping. Some of them do not like women, especially girls who do any activity. I’m proud that I’m becoming a success and these old-minded people are now under my training to learn hooping. I want to be a superstar in the hoop!” Marium said in an interview.
In an interview with Marium’s father, he said the following:
“My girl’s mission is to change the fate of my country, of the poor and save the world from suicide attacks and terrorism. And if we fight together but not by weapons – Hoop is our weapon – our different ideas will eliminate the terrorism and suicide attacks. I believe that all peace-loving hoopers and artists can make a difference in the world of peace. Hula hooping can eradicate jihad from the Muslim world.“
Marium worked for the Pakistan Youth Development Network, where she was an ambassador for her popular hula hoop school. She quickly became a role model for Pakistani women, winning great admiration. In each show there were cameras recording her, and there was a lot of public talk about her. Her hula hoop school ended up teaching 6,000 girls in all areas of Pakistan. Marium says:
“The children of my country are afraid because of the explosions, the dead and kidnapped. My organization is giving hope. It’s free to learn and join; our young children are poor and financial help is needed.”

She did social work and loved to help people. She went to hospitals to give gifts and offer support or money to children with cancer. Her father told me that Marium’s dream was to have a hospital in order to help everyone for free, and to have a foundation that would spread across the planet to protect those who need it.
When Marium turned 17, she was forced to marry an 18-year-old man. In Pakistan, fundamentalist laws are still valid for all, without exception, and one of them is forced marriage. Her husband (the father tells me) was very traditionalist, with an old man’s mind. He was very conservative and treated Marium terribly.
Shortly after getting married, her husband forced her to cancel all her commitments and passions, and to stay in the house to serve him. She had to close all her websites, including her profile on Facebook. He mistreated her psychologically and did not let her leave the house, even to go for a walk. He did not allow her any contact with her family. Then, there came a blessing from God, a son. Marium became a mother, which gave her reason to continue and endure all the abuses of her marriage. He is the one who made her days happy. Marium loved him and would have given her life for him.

Shortly thereafter, Marium came down with Lupus, a chronic immune disease that damages many parts of the body, mainly affecting the kidneys and the muscular and nervous systems. It is a disease that is not curable, but with a good treatment, one can survive. Unfortunately for Marium, her husband did not want to help her. He refused to receive $5,000 from Marium’s father for treatment. He did not take her to the hospital and unfortunately, Marium died on July 31, 2015, at 19 years of age. Her husband informed Marium’s family of her death 4 months after she had died. She left her precious son in the hands of this tyrant. According to the traditional laws of Pakistan, the foregoing is fully permitted.

Marium’s father continues to fight for his daughter’s dream and continues to teach hula hoop to the girls of Pakistan. He persists in fighting against the oppression that all women in his land are victims of. He tells me through messages that he will never rest until he achieves the gender equality that Marium longed for. La familia de Marium es de escasos recursos, no se dejaron vencer por los obstáculos de la vida y salieron adelante derrotando todas las dificultades; incluso, Marium y su padre recaudaron el dinero suficiente para hacer 4.000 hulas y así enseñar a todas las niñas, niños y mujeres de Pakistán. A pesar de que en Pakistán está prohibido para las mujeres hacer cualquier actividad recreativa o actuar en televisión sin permiso de sus esposos o acudientes (no importa la edad que tenga la mujer) Marium realizó cientos de shows en las calles, eventos de empresas; apareció en la televisión varias veces. Ella posee más de 50 premios nacionales y certificaciones, e incluso participó en la inauguración de los Juegos Olímpicos Nacionales en Pakistán.

Marium era reconocida en el mundo por su lucha antiterrorista por medio del hula, la paz, la hermandad y el amor; esto hizo que Marium ganara tanto seguidores como enemigos debido a su liberalismo de las leyes tradicionales en su comunidad.
“Estoy trabajando en mi misión, la paz mediante el aro, el cambio de las mentes de los viejos pensadores mediante el uso de hooping. Algunos de ellos no les gustan las mujeres, especialmente las niñas que realizan cualquier actividad. Estoy orgullosa de que estoy convirtiendo en un éxito. Estas personas de mentalidad antigua ahora están bajo mi entrenamiento para aprender hooping. ¡Quiero ser una súper estrella del aro! Dijo Marium en una entrevista.
En una entrevista al padre de Marium, él dice lo siguiente:
“La misión de mi niña es poder cambiar la suerte de mi país, de los pobres y salvar al mundo de los ataques suicidas y el terrorismo. Y si luchamos juntos pero no por las armas, Hoop es nuestra arma, nuestras diferentes ideas eliminarán el terrorismo y los ataques suicidas. Creo que todos los hoopers, amantes de la paz y artistas pueden hacer una diferencia en el mundo de la paz. Hula hooping puede erradicar Yihad del mundo musulmán”.

“Los hijos de mi país tienen miedo debido a las explosiones, a los muertos y secuestrados. Mi organización está dando esperanza. Es gratis aprender y unirse, nuestros niños pequeños son pobres y se necesita ayuda financiera”.

Ella hizo obras sociales; como dice anteriormente, le encantaba ayudar. Iba a hospitales para brindar regalos, acompañamiento o dinero a los niños con cáncer. Su padre me dijo que el sueño de Marium era tener un hospital y así socorrer gratuitamente a todo el mundo, tener una fundación que se extendería por el planeta para amparar a los más necesitados.
Cuando Marium cumple 17 años, es obligada a casarse con un muchacho de 18 años. En Pakistán, las leyes fundamentalistas siguen vigentes para todos, sin excepción, y una de ellas es el matrimonio forzado. Su esposo (me cuenta el padre) es tradicionalista, tiene mente de anciano, es muy conservador y se comportó con Marium como un demonio.
El matrimonio de Marium fue un infierno. Poco después de casarse la forzó a cancelar todos sus compromisos y quedarse en la casa sirviendo a su marido, le cerró todas las páginas en internet, incluido su perfil en Facebook, la maltrataba psicológicamente, no la dejaba salir de casa, ni siquiera a dar un paseo, no le permitió ningún contacto con su familia. Llega una bendición de Dios, un hijo. Marium se convierte en madre, es una razón para seguir y aguantar todos los abusos de su matrimonio, el pequeño se convierte en aquel que le alegra el día, lo ama y da la vida por él.

Marium contrae Lupus, una enfermedad crónica inmune que daña cualquier parte del cuerpo humano, afecta principalmente los riñones, el sistema muscular y el sistema nervioso, es una enfermedad que no es curable, pero con un buen tratamiento se puede vivir. Lamentablemente para Marium, su esposo no fue consiente de la situación. Su esposo no quiso recibir 5.000 dólares que envió el padre de Marium para su tratamiento; no la llevaba al hospital. Eso para mí es homicidio. Marium muere el 31 de Julio del año 2015, a los 19 años. Su esposo avisó de la muerte de Marium a su familia 4 meses después de fallecida. Ella deja un hijo en manos de este tirano. Según las leyes tradicionales de Pakistán, lo anterior dicho está totalmente permitido.

El padre de Marium sigue luchando por el sueño de su hija, continua enseñando hula hoop a las niñas de Pakistán, persiste en luchar en contra de las opresiones que son víctimas todas las mujeres en su tierra.
