As I learn more and more about juggling history, I find many amusing or astonishing stories from the lives and careers of jugglers of the past. I thought it would be interesting to readers to collect some of these in a series of articles. Enjoy Part 1 of this series.

How Ernest Montego Became Interested In Juggling
Ernest Montego
Ernest Montego was one of the greatest juggling artists of all time. The story of how he became interested in juggling is quite amazing. Ernest Montego was born Ernst Kuhn in Aschaffenburg, Germany on June 22, 1936. His mother was a swimmer and his father was a high diver. They never married and Ernest grew up never knowing his father. At the age of 12, Ernest went to the cinema to see the film Tonelli. In that film, he saw Francis and Lottie Brunn performing their early juggling act. Ernest was fascinated with the juggling he saw and decided on the spot that he would become a juggling artist. He went home and cut out cardboard rings and borrowed swinging clubs from a local gymnasium and taught himself how to juggle. To quote Ernest, “People started saying, ‘No, he’s not starting it, too. Surely not!’” He went and asked his mother what they were talking about. She told him that he had a half-brother and half-sister who were world famous jugglers – Francis Brunn and Lottie Brunn. The very jugglers who inspired him to become a juggler turned out to be his half-siblings.

Ernest started his international performing career at the age of 17 and stated in his marketing that he was the half-brother of Francis Brunn, who was the world’s most famous juggler at that time. At the age of 25, during a stopover from Australia to Germany, Ernest finally met his half-brother Francis in Las Vegas and convinced him that he was indeed a part of the family. Up until that time, Francis Brunn had assumed that Montego’s claim to be his half-brother was merely for the sake of publicity. However, Ernest’s very strong resemblance to Francis’ father caused him to call his father and learn the truth. Ernest and Francis traveled to New York City and Ernest finally met his father. Ernest would later get to know Lottie and her family.

Alexander Kiss and the Fake Enrico Rastelli Trick
Alexander Kiss
Alexander Kiss (1921 – 1990) is often considered the father of juggling in the Soviet Union. He was immensely talented and inventive. He was especially talented at juggling while bouncing a ball (or even a springy club) on his head. An older friend of Kiss once told him that Enrico Rastelli had been able to bounce two balls on his head while juggling four sticks. Alexander went to work learning this trick and after countless hours of practice could do it well enough to show the friend who had initially mentioned it. The friend was amazed that Kiss had learned it. Kiss was amazed in turn when the friend told him that he had been joking about Rastelli doing it. I’ve confirmed the accuracy of this story with Kiss’ son.

The Key to Gaston Palmer’s Success
Gaston Palmer
Gaston Palmer was born on March 4, 1886 in Marseille, France into a juggling and circus family. Around 1917, Gaston began performing as a solo Gentleman Juggler. When performing in America early in his solo career, he had a particularly bad performance with many drops that was due to being overly tired from a late night party the previous evening. When he dropped during the performance, he uncharacteristically decided to talk to the audience and to the props themselves. The result was a great deal of laughter from the audience. From that performance on, Gaston Palmer became a talking comedy juggler. Critics would often note that Gaston couldn’t fail as a juggler, for if he was successful with a trick the audience would applaud and if he failed at a trick, the audience would laugh. Palmer stated in a newspaper interview that from that point on he never practiced. “I find it is better to miss than not to miss. Now I never know when my trick is going to come off. When I changed my act, I earned ten times more money than when I never missed a trick.”

ジャグリングの歴史を紐解いていると、かつて活躍したジャグラーたちの面白い話、あっと驚くような話が出てくる。その中から、特に興味深い話をシリーズでお届け。
ポール・スパドーニ（Paul Spadoni）の大砲事件

最初の話は、ジャグリングの歴史家であるエリック・オーベリ（Erik Åberg）氏のアーカイブと研究の中からご紹介。1904 年、ストロングマンジャグラーのポール・スパドーニについて、次のような新聞記事が掲載されている。
記事内容訳：
ジャグラー、ポール・スパドーニは、しばらく前からアメリカで大変な成功を収めている。そのスパドーニが、オハイオ州トリードで驚くべき体験をした。
この街のグラフィック・ジャーナリズムが、以下のように証言している。
「昨日、アーケード劇場の舞台が数秒の間、戦場のようになった。あたかも、レンガの壁に大砲の球を撃ち込むべく、敵が包囲していたかのようだった。衝撃が起きたその時、舞台袖に控えていた人たちは散り散りになった。煙が晴れたときに見えたのは、大きくへこんだ壁、45 ポンドの大砲の球が舞台の上をあてもなく転がる様、そしてまだ少し煙を上げる大砲だった。この騒ぎの直接の原因であるジャグラーのスパドーニが、唯一そこに立っていた。舞台上の他の人々は、安全な場所に隠れていた。
「スパドーニは、この音から壁への激突までの数秒の間に、これまで経験したことのないような命の危険にさらされていた。彼は、『大砲から発射された球を肩で受け止める』という新しい演技の練習をしていた。大砲は舞台の片側に置かれ、スパドーニはその反対側にいた。弾が発射されると、スパドーニは弾の下に身構え、自分の首の上で安全にキャッチするつもりだった。しかし昨日の時点で火薬の量を調節したものの、必要以上に火薬を詰め込んでしまっていたのだ。
「スパドーニが大砲の反対側から発射の合図をするや否や、閃光が走り、球はものすごい速さで舞台を横切っていった。ボールは間一髪のところで彼の側頭部をかすめる。球は劇場のレンガの壁にぶつかり、人の手の大きさほどのへこみを残した。すんでのところで逃げおおせたスパドーニは、もう次はこのように運良く難を逃れることはないだろうと思い、方法を変えることにした。今朝は、木の盾を用意して、それを通過してから球が飛んでくるようにして、衝撃を弱めるようにした」

エルネスト・モンテゴ（Ernest Montego）がジャグリングを始めたわけ

エルネスト・モンテゴは、史上最も偉大なジャグリングアーティストの一人だ。彼がジャグリングに興味を持つようになった経緯が、非常に面白い。エルネスト・モンテゴは、1936 年 6 月 22 日にドイツのアシャッフェンブルクでエルンスト・クーン（Ernst Kuhn）として生まれた。母親は水泳選手で、父親は高飛び込み選手だった。二人は結婚せず、エルネストは父親を知らずに育った。12 歳のとき、エルネストは『トネッリ（Tonelli）』という映画を見に行った。その映画の中で、フランシス・ブルン（Francis Brunn）とロッティ・ブルン（Lottie Brunn）が初期のジャグリングを披露しているのを見た。エルネストはそのジャグリングに魅了され、その場でジャグラーになることを決意した。家に帰り、ボール紙を切り抜いてリングを作り、近くの体育館からスイングクラブを借りて、独学でジャグリングを覚えた。そこで、エルネストによると周囲の「みんなが『なんだ、あいつまで始めるのか』と言い始めた」のである。母に、これは一体何のことなのか尋ねてみた。そこで判明したのが、フランシス・ブルンとロッティ・ブルンは、エルネストの異母兄姉なのだということだった。つまり、彼がジャグラーになるきっかけとなった二人は自身の親戚だったのだ。

エルネストは 17 歳で国際的に芸能活動を開始し、当時世界で最も有名なジャグラーであったフランシス・ブルンの異母兄であることを、マーケティングの際にも明記していた。25 歳の時、オーストラリアからドイツに帰る際、エルネストはついにラスベガスで異母兄のフランシスに会い、そして自分が親戚であることを納得させた。それまでフランシス・ブルンは、モンテゴが自分の異母兄であると語っているのは、単に売名のための嘘だと思い込んでいた。しかし、エルネストがフランシスの父に非常によく似ていたことから、父に電話をかけ、真実を知ることになった。エルネストとフランシスはニューヨークへ行き、エルネストはついに父に会った。その後、ロッティとその家族とも知り合っている。

アレキサンダー・キス（Alexander Kiss）と、嘘から生まれた「ラステッリの技」
アレキサンダー・キス
アレキサンダー・キス (1921 – 1990)は、ソ連におけるジャグリングの父とも称される。才能溢れる、クリエイティブなジャグラーだった。特に得意としたのが、ボール（バネの入ったクラブの時もあった）を頭の上でバウンスしながらジャグリングをする技だ。さて、キスの旧友が、ある日「エンリコ・ラステッリは 2 つのボールをバウンスしながら 4 本のスティックをジャグリングすることができたんだぜ」と教える。アレキサンダーはこの技を習得するために多大な時間を費やし、ついにはそれをショーに取り入れるまでに上達し、そこで最初に技について教えてくれたその友人にも見せた。すると友人は、キスがその技をやってのけたことに大変仰天した。驚いたのはキスの方である。何故ならその友人曰く、ラステッリの技の話は、ただの冗談だった、というのである。この逸話が本当であるということについては、筆者も直接、キスの子息に確認をしている。

ガストン・パルマー（Gaston Palmer）の、人間万事塞翁が馬

ガストン・パルマーは、1886 年 3 月 4 日にフランスはマルセイユで、ジャグリングとサーカスを営む家族のもとに生まれたジャグラー。1917 年ごろ、ガストンはソロのジェントルマンジャグリングパフォーマーとしてスタートした。そのキャリアの初期、米国でパフォーマンスをしていたころ、前日の夜に遅くまで参加していたパーティで疲れきっていた彼は、非常にドロップが多く、大失敗の演技をしたことがあった。その演技の最中、ドロップをした時に、普段はそのようなことはしないのだが、その時ばかりは、観客に話しかけ、道具にまで話しかけた。その結果、観客に大ウケした。その時以来、彼は喋りを交えたコメディジャグラーへと転身したのだ。批評家は、「ガストンはジャグラーとして失敗をすることがない。何故なら、技が成功すれば観客は拍手するし、失敗すれば、観客は大笑いするからである」と評することもあった。パルマーが新聞のインタビューに答えたところによると、それ以来彼は練習もしなくなった、ということである。「失敗する方が、成功するよりいい、っていうことがわかっちゃってね。今では、いつ成功するかもわからないんだよ。演技の内容を変えてからの方が、技を一切失敗しなかった頃よりも 10 倍稼いでます」
