Candle Flipping with Gimmicked Candles

In a past article, I wrote about Salerno’s amazing self-lighting candle, which you can read about by clicking here. Since then, I have found another method of performing the trick as well as a different gimmicked candle trick. I believe these two could be combined into one routine.

The Self-Lighting Candle

Unlike Salerno’s self-lighting candle, which used a battery and a mercury switch, the one discussed here is less high tech. It is found in the 1912 book Exclusive Magical Secrets by Will Goldston. You can see how this trick candle is made and used in the following photos.

The Slow-Motion Flipping Candle

The next gimmicked candle flip trick comes from the 1951 Jugglers’ Bulletin Annual, published by Roger Montandon, who graciously granted me permission to use any content from the bulletins in my writings before his passing in 2017. It shows a comedy gag for ending a legit candle flipping routine.

With the renewed interest in gentleman juggling, perhaps the skill of candle flipping will once again be performed by jugglers as it was in the days of Cinquevalli, Salerno, Kara, and Adanos.

David Cain is a professional juggler, juggling historian, and the owner of the world's only juggling museum, the Museum of Juggling History. He is a Guinness world record holder and 15 time IJA gold medalist. In addition to his juggling pursuits, David is a successful composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and singer as well as the author of sixteen books.
