In the history of juggling, there are various stories, myths, legends, and writings about jugglers who performed unimaginable feats. Verifying their accuracy, especially that of ancient accounts, is the complex task of a juggling researcher.

For example, in the history of Chinese juggling, there is the story of Lanzi, who “performed (before Lord Yuan of Song, from 531-517 BC) on stilts twice his height, attached to his legs. He walked and ran on them, and also juggled seven swords, throwing them alternately and always keeping five in the air.”

Similarly, there is the story of the soldier Xiong Yiliao, who, in 603 BC, in the midst of a battle between the armies of Chu and Song, juggled nine balls, distracting the Song troops. The Chu army seized this opportunity and launched a surprise attack, defeating the Song army.

More recently, in 2018, a juggler approached me to tell me about his experience at a circus convention in Uruguay. He said that he met a juggler there who could perfectly juggle 10 clubs, but he didn’t like to record videos or train with other jugglers. The few who witnessed this feat at the convention applauded him, but none took a photograph or video.

And there are thousands of stories like this. I’m not saying they’re false; you just have to investigate their veracity or have some proof, as far as possible and depending on the era of the story.

On this occasion, I will share an article written by John Roberts, published on October 30, 1937, for the Forum section of the well-known magazine Billboard, where the “feats” of a French juggler are described. Roberts uses this publication to seek the veracity of these feats.

Doubts Tale Of Frenchman’s Juggling Feats

I recently visited with a juggler here who called my attention to some letters that have appeared in The Forum on the art of juggling and articles on the subject from The Billboard. I found them to be very interesting, especially one that had to do with а wealthy Frenchman who practices juggling for the love of it.

It was stated that he flashes nine clubs, showers seven from either hand and juggles seven while balancing one on his forehead. His feature, however, appears to be a mere trifle of juggling seven, throwing one down between his legs while keeping six clubs going and then kicking the other club up into the seven-juggle again. If he can do all these tricks, he should be a wealthy man, as he could have made a fortune as a professional had he entered that field.

I am “from Missouri” regarding the report that he can do these tricks and I have been wondering whether anyone else who has traveled in Europe can verify it, as I think someone has had a pipe dream.

As an ardent admirer of the theater and all forms of amusement, I do not believe that flesh acts will ever die out. I hope some of the boys who keep things moving have something to say regarding this.

Dudas sobre las hazañas de un malabarista francés

En la historia del malabarismo existen diferentes relatos, mitos, leyendas o escritos sobre malabaristas que hicieron cosas impensables. Comprobar la veracidad de los mismos, sobre todo de los relatos antiguos, es el complejo trabajo de un investigador/historiador de malabarismo.

Por ejemplo, existe en la historia del malabarismo chino el relato de Lanzi quien “actuó (ante el señor Yuan de Song, de los años 531-517 a.C.) sobre zancos que medían el doble de su cuerpo y estaban sujetos a sus piernas. Caminaba y corría sobre ellos, y también hacía malabares con siete espadas, lanzándolas alternativamente y manteniendo siempre cinco en el aire”.

Igualmente, está la historia del soldado Xiong Yiliao que, en el año 603 a.C., en medio de una batalla de los ejércitos de Chu y Song, hizo malabares con nueve pelotas, distrayendo a las tropas Song. El ejército de Chu aprovechó esa oportunidad y realizó un ataque sorpresa derrotando así al ejército de Song.

Más reciente, en el año 2018, un malabarista se me acercó a hablarme de su experiencia en una convención de circo en Uruguay. Me dijo que allí conoció a un malabarista que podía hacer malabares con 10 clavas perfectamente, solo que no le gustaba grabar videos ni entrenar con malabaristas. Los pocos que vieron tal hazaña en la convención le aplaudieron, pero ninguno hizo una fotografía o un video.

Y así existen miles de historias. No digo que sean falsas, solo hay que investigar su veracidad o tener alguna prueba en la medida de lo posible y dependiendo de la época de la historia.

En esta ocasión, daré a conocer un artículo escrito por John Roberts, publicado el 30 de octubre de 1937 para la sección Forum, de la conocida revista Billboard donde se describen las “hazañas” de un malabarista francés. Roberts busca a través de esa publicación la veracidad de tales proezas.

Duda de la historia de las proezas de malabarismo del francés

Hace poco visité a un malabarista que me llamó la atención sobre unas cartas publicadas en The Forum sobre el arte del malabarismo y artículos sobre el tema en The Billboard. Me parecieron muy interesantes, especialmente uno que trataba sobre un francés adinerado que practica malabarismo por puro placer.

Se decía que hacía malabares con nueve mazas, lanzaba siete con cada mano y hacía malabares con siete mientras equilibraba una en la frente. Sin embargo, su truco parece ser una simple demostración de malabarismo con siete mazas: lanzaba una entre las piernas mientras mantenía seis en movimiento y luego impulsaba la otra hacia arriba para volver a hacer malabares con siete. Si puede hacer todos estos trucos, debería ser un hombre rico, ya que podría haber hecho una fortuna como profesional si se hubiera dedicado a ello.

Soy de Missouri y me pregunto si alguien más que haya viajado por Europa puede confirmarlo, pues creo que alguien ha tenido una fantasía.

Como ferviente admirador del teatro y de todas las formas de entretenimiento, no creo que los espectáculos con actores vayan a desaparecer jamás. Espero que algunos de los artistas que mantienen el ambiente animado tengan algo que decir al respecto.
