Some of our dedicated eZine readers may have noticed that eJuggle has gotten a little bit of a makeover. As part of our ongoing website overhaul project, we have integrated eJuggle into juggle.org. We’ve also updated the look to a format that is more conducive to being viewed as part of our website.
In addition to updating the look, we’ve got some great members-only content coming your way soon to eJuggle! Look for the full 2013, 2014, and 2015 Festival videos as well as some never before seen videos of juggling legends from years gone by.
In other news, IJA Board nominations are open! If you’ve ever wanted to make a difference within the IJA, or know an IJA member who you feel would make a good board member, send your nomination to ijanominations@juggle.org by May 15th, 2017.
Happy to be on Board,

Call for letters of interest: 2018 IJA Festival Director – Deadline June 15
The IJA is looking for a Festival Director for the 2018 IJA Festival in Springfield, Massachusetts, July 16 – 22.
The IJA Festival Director is responsible for organizing and overseeing all aspects of the IJA Annual Festival. This includes but is not limited to making a site visit, being the main liaison between the facility and the IJA, creating and maintaining a festival budget, finding volunteers for key festival positions including Show and Championships Directors, Workshops Director, and registration personnel among others and working with the Show and Championships Directors to provide the highest quality performances/competitions while remaining in budget.
Responsibilities:
- Assemble and lead a team to produce the IJA festival, including Registrar, Volunteers Coordinator, Security Coordinator, Vendors Coordinator, Championships Director, Shows Producer, Stage Manager, Games Director, Numbers Director, and many others
- Negotiate for facilities and services on behalf of the Board
- Prepare and maintain a festival budget
- Report progress to the Board on a monthly basis
The festival director works with the venue to set up a schedule of events, coordinates volunteers, promotes the festival, and assists the show directors with booking acts. Registration is managed for you using our administrative web tools. Experienced previous festival directors provide a lot of mentoring to make sure you know what needs to be done, and when.
Interested parties should submit a letter of interest by email to ija.chair@juggle.org by June 15th. Please include pertinent experience and qualifications.
A lot of the festival elements are similar from year so you aren’t starting from scratch. There is also room to take advantage of local assets and add your own personal flair.
Board nominations 2017 – Deadline May 15, by Don Lewis
Start thinking about who you want to see on the IJA Board ballot for directors for the 2017-2019 period. This year, there are three positions open on the seven-member Board.
Board members have a fiduciary duty to the IJA. That simply means that they must act in the best interests of the association. Board members are expected to attend monthly phone meetings, be aware of ongoing projects, and ensure that basic business requirements are met. The IJA does have professional bookkeeping service to ensure that financial information is presented in an understandable and timely manner.
Some people may be concerned about the potential risk of being on a non-profit Board. There is no doubt that it is a responsibility. However, the IJA maintains a comprehensive Directors and Officers liability insurance package. This makes it practical for people to participate in the governance of the IJA without placing themselves at risk from the unexpected.
Individual roles on the Board can vary. Some choose to work extensively on specific projects, while others are more comfortable with an oversight role. It can be a fascinating experience. The IJA cannot prosper without participation. Take your juggling to the next level by showing the IJA how to thrive.
Nominate yourself or someone you would like to see on the IJA Board. Be aware that the person staring back at you in the mirror is the best person to represent your views and ambitions for the future of juggling.
Send your nominations to ijanominations@juggle.org by May 15th, 2017. You can see more information about the nomination process on the IJA website at https://juggle.org/business/nominations/
Hey! The IJA does not run by itself – participate! Nomination deadline is May 15th, 2017.

World Juggling Day 2017 – 70th anniversary of the IJA’s founding – June 17, by Erin Stephens
On June 17, we will not only be celebrating WJD with jugglers around the world, but we will also be celebrating the exact day of the 70th Anniversary of the IJA’s founding!! The IJA was founded on June 17, 1947, and now we celebrate all that it has contributed to the world of juggling throughout the past 70 years!
Register Your Event: www.juggle.org/calendar/worldjugglingday/add
This year we have a fun new WJD registration process on our new website. When you register, it will create an event page with its own unique URL. You can use this page to promote your event on social media. It can include a photo, directions, price, contact information, and even a map of the location.
IJA members should SIGN IN first (at the top of the page) to make sure your WJD event is listed under your name, which is necessary if you want to be able to edit it later, which you can do at www.juggle.org/calendar/worldjugglingday/list.
Non-members can add a WJD event but won’t be able to edit it once it’s submitted.
This is a new feature, so please email us at wjd2017@juggle.org if you have any problems registering or updating your event.
You can see all registered WJD events at www.juggle.org/calendar/, including an interactive world map that pins the locations of each of the events.
The main World Juggling Day page can be found on the IJA website www.juggle.org under the Programs menu.
WJD T-shirts will be on sale mid-May. We are working with an excellent Mexican juggling artist on the artwork and are excited by the first versions of the design that she has sent. Stay tuned!
Join the IJA World Juggling Day Event Page to see what everyone else is up to around the world on this epic day: https://www.facebook.com/events/335776963420689/
Official 2017 WJD Hashtag: Make sure to tag all your photos and videos from the day on social media with #WJD2017 and/or #WorldJugglingDay2017

The IJA needs you! Sign up now to volunteer at this year’s festival! by Mike Sullivan
The annual IJA festival is a mammoth event with hundreds of moving parts and non-stop activity night and day for a whole week. And even with an incredible core team of key volunteers running all the major parts of the festival, our week isn’t possible without the additional volunteer efforts of many more IJA members attending the festival.
We need YOU — yes, YOU! — to pitch in! Just a few hours of volunteer work out of your festival week will make a big difference in helping our festival run smoothly for the enjoyment of everyone. None of the jobs involve any heavy lifting, manual labor or advanced technical skills — but they DO need to be filled by friendly people who are willing to “render assistance to fellow jugglers” — as we say in the IJA’s mission statement.
You can sign up for a volunteer time slot (or several!) quickly and easily this year, using an online tool or mobile app. We REALLY need a lot of folks to help out throughout the week, for an hour here or there, for as many spots as you can fit into the week.
PLEASE take a moment to look over the volunteer slots we need filled, and then see how many of them you can sign up for. Remember, IJA doesn’t exist without YOU — and our festival NEEDS your help to make the week fun and hassle-free for everyone!
CLICK HERE to review the volunteer spots open now and to sign up for some hours when you can help!
For questions on volunteering, email IJA Volunteer Coordinator Dina Scharnhorst at festvolunteers@juggle.org.

BUSKING COMPETITION
The IJA is looking for four street performers to entertain 10,000 people at the downtown Farmer’s Market in Cedar Rapids. The four performers will hit the bricks and represent the art of juggling from 9am – 12pm Saturday morning.
Each performer will get a minimum of two 30-minute shows to pass the hat (sound system provided), a $100 tip from the IJA to start off with, and a free voucher for lunch. This is a great way for a busking act to earn money while at the festival. Fire and other danger acts have been approved for this outdoor venue.
To be considered for this year’s event, please submit an email with a link to your promotional materials to: festival2017@juggle.org. Deadline for submitting promo materials is to be announced.
Festival attendees, don’t miss the busking shows on Saturday morning!

Directed by Peter Davison.
*Some claims may be exaggerated for theatrical purposes.

Gena is our 2017 Award of Excellence Winner, has put together a special performance, and will be conducting a free workshop for the 70th Anniversary of the IJA Festival!
Paul Ponce’s act has been a hit in practically any type of venue around the world, from New York to Tokyo, Melbourne to Monte Carlo, Berlin to Los Angeles. Jugglers interested in interviewing with him while at the IJA Festival should have strong skills with one diabolo and at least a basic ability to do two. (You will be required to pass a background check to work in the schools.)

THE JUGGLING HISTORY SHOW
The Juggling History Show is a first-of-its-kind presentation at an IJA Festival. Juggling historians and full-time performers Erik Åberg and David Cain have created a show that will resurrect juggling tricks from the past that modern audiences and jugglers have never or rarely seen, and they’ll provide background information about the tricks.
They will also share videos of Bobby May, King Repp, Adanos, Trixie, and others that have never been made public before. Please be sure to join Erik, David, and several special guests for this one-of-a-kind performance.

WATER SKUGGLING
As part of an ambitious pursuit to make this year’s IJA the biggest and best festival yet, the International Jugglers Association is joining forces with the Five Seasons Ski Team for the first ever Water Skuggling Workshop!
What in the world is water skuggling? It’s the rare combination of advanced water skiing and advanced juggling, pioneered in 2012 by Doug Sayers and the Five Seasons Ski Team. In the few short collaborations with Doug, and later with Bob and Trish Evans, they’ve done everything from juggling 7 balls, to passing, bounce juggling, and even juggling in a human pyramid.
But there’s so much more that could be done with this concept! We’re looking for a small group of motivated jugglers to think outside the box and open it to the stylistic diversity of modern juggling. Water skiing experience is helpful, but not required. Those who are athletic and have experience with learning balance and stability skills usually learn to ski quickly. However, water skuggling is a multitasking skill, so our students will need to be able to juggle while focusing on skiing.
If you’re selected, you will learn one-on-one from experienced members of the nationally competitive Five Seasons Ski Team, using the best and safest equipment available. And of course, if it’s not on video, it never happened. We’ll be using multiple waterproof GoPro cameras to make sure you have plenty to show off afterwards.
This class will be held at Ellis Park along the Cedar River, about 1.8 miles from the U.S. Cellular Center. Days, times and pricing TBA — contact David Lammers for further information. This is a limited capacity class, so if you’re interested, please either Message David Lammers on Facebook, or email him at: skuggling@juggle.org.
For more excitement, find the Five Seasons Ski Team on all major social media, and follow the IJA for more reasons not to miss the historic 70th annual festival, in Cedar Rapids on July 10-16, 2017.

“WOMEN IN JUGGLING”
VIDEO PREMIERE & PERFORMANCE BY CINDY MARVELL
In 2002 Connie “Paprika” Leaverton and Cindy Marvell joined forces in documenting women jugglers across the globe in the film “Trailblazers, Women Who Juggle.”
In 2013, Paprika continued the project, and went on to film on the Asian Pacific Islands of Tonga where almost all women juggle. Juggling (or Hiko) is also a cultural dance, an ancient song, a sport and a game for women of all ages and has been in their culture for 3000 years.
Join us for partial screenings of both documentaries and a discussion on women and men jugglers from around the world.

IJA JOGGLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2017 IJA World Joggling Championships is coming to Iowa on Saturday, July 15, 2017!
This year’s competitions will feature a road race on a USATF-certified 5K course, hosted by Bill Bails of Junction Jugglefest and local sponsors. Following the road race, events will continue at Coe College’s Clark outdoor track, with various shorter distance races and sprints, as well as a relay event. The Coe College track is at the corner of 14th St. NE and C Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids, 1.1 miles from the U.S. Cellular Center.
The road race will start at 7:30am and will be chip-timed. Jogglers will have transportation to the 5K route, as well as to the Coe College track and back to the main fest venue. The track events are anticipated to take place around 9:30am-12:30pm and will include 3-ball, 5-ball and 7-ball joggling events, which will also be timed for new world records.
Highlights for this year: Two joggling venues, including IJA’s first official 5K road race.
Chip timing for the 5K: You get to run with a chip transponder in your shoe that accurately tracks and reports your performance time. How neat is that?
USATF cerfitied course: This is the second time the IJA is hosting a road race-style event in the last three years, though this time the route is officially certified. This could be your opportunity to set, or witness, a new world record at the IJA Joggling Championships! (https://www.recordholders.org/en/list/joggling.html)
Runners welcome: For the first time, we are encouraging the local running community to join in the IJA’s road race. Runner or joggler, you’ll have the opportunity to win prizes! This is a great opportunity for runners and jogglers to mingle and for the IJA to promote the sport of joggling. You’ll find it’s a total mind-body workout!
T-shirts and prizes: We are planning the return of some long-requested joggling T-shirts. A limited number will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and more information on shirts will be made available around May if you have registered online. There will also be surprises for top joggling performers!
The entry fee for jogglers will cover entry to all joggling events (including the 5K road race), snacks, drinks, possible T-shirts (see above) and hours of fun! Joggling keeps your mind sharp, steadies your juggling form and improves endurance, and it’s good for your health in general. Start training now, and we hope to see you at this year’s IJA World Joggling Championships!!
If you are interested in volunteering for this year’s joggling competition (driver, judge, first aid, etc.) or looking for more information, please contact Emily Moore at joggling2017@juggle.org.
Rough Schedule (subject to change):
6:30 or 7am: Buses depart for road race
7:30am: 5K road race begins
8-8:30am: Snacks and drinks, followed by informal awards for road race
8:30-9am: Wrap up race and transportation to Coe College track (corner of 14th St. NE and C Ave. NE)
