Chair’s message, by Nathan Wakefield

The Halloween season is upon us, and I don’t know about you jugglers, but things are getting pretty spooky in my neck of the woods!

Everything is moving full scream a-head with our 71st annual festival. Our Festival Director NoHell Yee has some truly amazing special ghouls lined up to perform in the Cascade of Scars show. Expect to hear performer announcements and information about all the festival hack-tivities, coming soon!

In other news, we are currently accepting nominations for our horrorary awards. If you know of a juggler who’s shown themselves to be axe-ceptional and a true cut above others in their field, drop the awards kill-mittee a line with your nominee and reasoning why you feel they deserve an award. All submissions will receive consideration and will not fall on deathears!

We’ve got a lot of great content being put out regularly, like our Chop Everything podcast (which is available on eye-tunes) and our Tricks of the Month videos, which feature some of the beast up and coming jugglers from around the world. Very soon, our 2017 festival video will be available on DVD and online screaming video for IJA members!

Off to juggle some pumpkins and skulls,

Nathan Wakefield

Stu Raynolds Appreciation Day,
by Scott Cain

October 29, 2017, marked the 90th birthday for longtime IJA member Stuart (Stu) Raynolds. Stu was present at the first IJA Convention in 1948 and has been a member for 70 years! He served twice as President of the organization and was the host of the 1977 Newark, Delaware, convention, considered by many to be the first modern-day convention/festival. He revolutionized club making by commercially offering a precision-made fiberglass club, the first significant development in club making to replace the wooden clubs of Harry Lind.

To mark the occasion of Stu’s 90 birthday, his son Jim and his family visited The Museum of Juggling History in Middletown, Ohio, not far from Jim’s home, and presented the museum with one of Stu’s performance props. Assistant museum curator Scott Cain had the pleasure of speaking to Stu on the phone on his birthday with Stu’s family present and read aloud the contents of a special proclamation from the IJA Board of Directors.

The IJA Board of Directors proclaimed October 29th, 2017, to be Stu Raynolds Appreciation Day in recognition of his significant contributions to the IJA and the juggling community in general. A framed copy of the proclamation was given to Stu’s family, and it will be personally delivered to Stu in early November when the family visits him. Thanks for all you’ve done for us, Stu.  And Happy Birthday!

Saloon by Cirque Éloize,
reviewed by Don Lewis

I recently went to see Saloon, by the Montreal based troupe Cirque Éloize.  This show was custom made for the western festival at St. Tite, a small town that supports an annual festival of all things “western”.  I saw the show in Montreal, before it went off on tour to Europe and the USA.

The show is anchored by three musicians who play and sing a succession of country and western hit songs while the rest of the dozen performers dance and clown between individual acts.  There was a Chinese pole which the acrobat mounted surprisingly by jumping off a building on the set.  There was a wagon wheel which turned into an airborne support for trapeze work and aerial straps.  A Cyr wheel was rolled expertly around the stage, and hand to hand balance captivated the audience.  There was a short juggling routine set in a bar where the juggler manipulated up to six clubs.  It wasn’t a group routine, but other cast members were interacting with the juggler and the set.

The music really carried the show along on a wave of enthusiasm.  The audience was seriously into it.  I’m not usually drawn to western themed shows, but this was a high energy treat.

You can see more information about the show on Cirque Éloize’s website.

Marketplace

From time to time, people contact us about juggling-related items that they’re selling or perhaps giving away to a good home.  It could be a sale, a swap, or just a come-and-get-it giveaway.  The IJA has no opinion on the potential value or quality of these items or services. Items are listed here as a service to members.  Caveat emptor.

Juggling — The Past and Future, book by Karl-Heinz Ziethen

Earlier this year, Karl-Heinz Ziethen came out with a long-awaited hardcover book, titled Juggling — The Past and Future. This 596-page book is an update on Ziethen’s 1981-82 two-volume set 4,000 Years of Juggling.  Information about the new book is available from the publisher (Niels Duinker) at jugglinghistory.com, and the book can be ordered from lulu.com.

A brief review of Ziethen’s 1981-82 two-volume set (and other juggling books) can be found in David Cain’s eJuggle article Rare Juggling Books (part 2), and David has said that he will be working on a review of the 2017 book in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

2018 wall calendar featuring jugglers, dancers and yogis, sold by Jenny Dinoia

I produced a really cool 2018 Wall Calendar that features jugglers, dancers and yogis.  It has pictures of Tony Pezzo, Jeremiah Johnston, Jacob D’Eustachio, James Nicovich, Melanie Webster and myself in the juggling community and Monique Flak in the fire/flow community.

You’ll find all 12 images and instructions for ordering at www.theyogaroomsf.com.

I am offering $5 off to the juggling community.  The calendar is usually $20 plus $3 shipping (US only), but for jugglers it is $15 plus $3 shipping.

US residents can send $18 via PayPal to theyogaroomsf@gmail.com, or via Venmo to 917-450-0733. Then email theyogaroomsf@gmail.com with your mailing address and mention JUGGLER for the discount.

Thanks, and I hope you enjoy the calendar!!
