Chair’s message, by Exuro Piechocki
As we move into Autumn, I am reflecting on what it is that makes the IJA great. From small jobs at the festival, to the large tasks of implementing the programs of the IJA, the crux of the IJA’s capabilities comes from volunteers. Anyone can volunteer with the IJA, and it is those who care and are willing to give some of their time that help make our team efforts become real. We are still seeking to fill some important positions within the IJA, could you be the one for the job?
Some specific roles we need to fill within the coming year still are:
-Communications Director
-eNewsletter Editor
-Video Coordinator
If you have skills that you want to put forth, or ideas that you would like to see implemented, I invite you to step up and join those who are already taking action. If you are motivated to render assistance to fellow jugglers, but don’t see an existing position that fits you, let us know what you’d like to help with or what your strengths are. All of our programs exist because at some point, someone decided to step up and make it so. Serving the jugglers among us by volunteering within the IJA is one of the most fulfilling things I do with my time, and it could be for you as well.

Halloween 2018, by Don Lewis
It is the end of September and Halloween is about a month away. I still get lots of kids coming to my door for some candy each year. When else do you get to see so many kids that quickly?
On Halloween nights when it isn’t too cold, I stand out on the porch and juggle while kids and parents do the rounds. Its a good occasion to use some of my lighted props. Some kids self identify as jugglers, having learned to juggle balls and scarves in school programs. They tend to get a bit more candy, and information about local juggling resources.
The IJA business card is one way of getting information about juggling out to young people. You can download and print some to give away to young hob-goblins. If you have a local juggling club, print that information on the other side. You never know when a seed that you have spread will take root and thrive. Putting our web address out there will get at least a few hits.
Parents tend to wander around with herds of kids to keep the kids safe, and themselves amused. I regularly hear comments like “I used to juggle a bit in college…”. You need to encourage them to get back into it. It can be a great activity to share with the kids. There are lots of parents looking for fun activities to do on their day with the kids.
There are those who are discouraged by the price of good props, particularly clubs. The Green Club Project solves that problem. You can make really well balanced clubs from mostly recycled materials. Plans are available for free in English, French, and Spanish on the IJA web site. I’ve made lots of these clubs and given them away. They are very easy to make, and are nearly indestructible. I’ve even seen illuminated Green Clubs with dollar store LED sets added that look fabulous.
Outreach is important. Tomorrow’s club passers have to come from somewhere. You just never know when a small gesture is going to grow into a brand new juggler!
