Festival update  by Afton Benson

Hello everyone,

Happy holidays and a safe new year to you all!

We’re nearly to 2022 and that means IJA Festival Registration will be opening soon.  Keep your eyes peeled for a special eNewsletter with all the details.

We’ll be back in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, July 11-17, 2022, for our historic 75th annual festival.  We know a lot is uncertain about the coming months, and we are actively taking steps that will make the festival as safe as possible.  You can see our current COVID-19 Protocol here.

As we near the opening of registration, please keep in mind that the IJA has no control over COVID guidelines from the government or for traveling.  Any guidelines from a state, local or federal government will be followed by the IJA.

You have time.  Get vaccinated and boosted if you are able.  Together we can make the 2022 IJA Festival as safe as possible for one another so that we can continue to juggle together for the next 75 years.

Registration opens soon!

Happy New Year,

Afton Benson

2022 IJA Festival Director

News about Mary Wilkins  by Roger Dollarhide

Dear IJA friends,

This is to announce that my long time dear friend Mary Elizabeth Wilkins, IJA HONORARY LIFE MEMBER and former IJA Historian, who attended many IJA Conventions in the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s to display her large memorabilia collection, has Alzheimer’s Disease and is no longer able to write or email or make phone calls.  She is, however, aware of her situation and has been preparing for it for a long time.

Mary is still enjoying life and is ably taken care of by her long time partner and roommate Christine McAllaster and the staff of their home as of earlier this year, the Atria Senior Living facility in San Dimas, CA.

One thing Mary still enjoys doing is reading.  She has always enjoyed sending and receiving lots of Christmas and other holiday and birthday (3-21-43) cards and news from her many friends (hint).  Mary’s and Chris’s mailing address is:

    Mary Wilkins and Christine McAllaster

    801 Cypress Way

    Apt. 507

    San Dimas, CA 91773

This message is approved by Mary and Chris, who regret they’re unable to respond or send messages but wish you all their Christmas and New Years best wishes.  And while I’m here, let me echo their message on my own behalf.

IJA Youth Juggling Academy looking for new director  by Amy Wieliczka

The IJA is looking for a new director

for the Youth Juggling Academy (YJA).  The YJA specifically supports educational juggling programs around the world through the YJA button achievement system, designed to accommodate children of all ages and juggling interests.  At a more strategic level, the YJA also facilitates the inclusion of juggling in physical education programs and as a cross-training exercise in athletic programs in order to promote interest in juggling among youth.  The YJA further aims to foster increased communication and community among the youth juggling community as a whole.

This volunteer position is perfect for anyone passionate about circus arts education and the future of juggling.  It is an ideal role for anyone looking to build (or flex) their network in juggling education, both within and outside of the juggling community.  The YJA Director will be responsible for managing and organizing the production of buttons for the Juggling Merit Buttons program and reporting to the IJA Board of Directors on a monthly basis.

The ideal YJA Director would:

  • Create and manage a global database of juggling instructors
  • Create educational resources to be used by teachers
  • Contact educational and athletics-based institutions to build partnerships
  • Design and implement a marketing strategy
  • Manage social media and press relations

If you are interested in this role, please send IJA Operations Officer Scott Steiskal a statement of intent, what you bring to the role, and any other relevant information.

YJA Director applications are due by: February 1, 2022.
