2023 Festival, July 17-23 — South Bend, Indiana  by Exuro Piechocki, Festival Director

IJA 2023 Festival South Bend

The IJA Festival is drawing nearer, and our excitement continues to grow as we look forward to seeing hundreds of our closest friends gather in one place.

Pre-registration will remain open through June 14th.  Don’t delay — purchase your festival package now.

If you’ve been on the fence about going, consider that the North American premiere of Wes Peden’s new show Rollercoaster is happening at the festival.  Tickets for the two Rollercoaster shows at the fest can now be purchased in the IJA Store (tickets are not included in the Festival Event Package).

For those of you who are arriving early in the week, consider signing up for our Monday afternoon Pre-fest Pub Crawl!  This walking tour of South Bend boasts a variety of locations to enjoy a cold beverage, while also exploring some of the great history of South Bend.  Only 14 spaces still remain for this unique event, so purchase your ticket now.

Limited hotel rooms at the discounted IJA rate are still available at both the Doubletree and Marriott hotels.  Make your reservations soon or you’ll need to find another place to stay!  The Doubletree and the Marriott are the ideal places to stay for the festival, located directly across the street from the convention center.

When considering just how to get to the IJA from afar this year, remember that the most inexpensive air travel option by a wide margin is to fly into Chicago and take the South Shore Line train to South Bend.  Detailed instructions on how to do this can be found under Getting There on the festival website.

Registration for the IJA Juggling Championships remains open through May 15th.  This prestigious competition is open to all, and you are strongly encouraged to apply.  Instructions for how to apply can be found in the Championships Rules.

Battle Night is confirmed to be making a return to the IJA this year.  One of the hottest events of 2022, Battle Night features 8 jugglers going head to head in a championship style bracket to be crowned the 3-club champion.  Created by Christian Tinoco and Unicirclo during the covid pandemic as an online event, Battle Night has grown to be an international juggling event held at festivals around the world.  This event will be live-streamed from the Bendix Arena at the Century Center on the evening of Wednesday July 19th to viewers around the world.  Competitors will be selected from those present at the festival!  Learn more about Battle Night at www.facebook.com/BattleNightOficial.

A big thank you goes out to FlowToys for sponsoring this year’s Flow Jam!  Following the Cascade of Stars on the evening of Saturday July 22nd, the Ballroom at the Century Center will be converted into an LED friendly arena featuring live DJs, where those of us who enjoy playing with light up props can get our groove on.  The main gym will keep the lights on for those who prefer to play with the lights on.  FlowToys is a member of the IJA Vendor Discount Program, so IJA members can claim a 10% VDP discount on vision clubs and other flow toys by going to FlowToys through the IJA VDP page.

See you soon in The Bend!

IJA Festival workshops  by Ben Muellers and Exuro Piechocki

IJA Festival

Are you planning to come to the IJA Festival?  Consider volunteering to teach a workshop!  Almost all IJA Festival workshops are taught by volunteers just like you who are passionate about sharing knowledge.

Workshops are the best way to break down tricks and concepts so that people can get a firm grasp of the path required to get to the next level.  Video tutorials are an amazing resource, but there’s something different about watching in person and being able to ask questions and get immediate answers.  Seeing breakdowns of what’s hard for one person to wrap their head around is just better than any video tutorial could be, because you can’t personalize a video for every single person.

Mastered a skill?  Found fun things, or have advice the community needs?  Host a workshop!  This is an easy way for you to play a part in the IJA Festival!  Sign up to help the next generation grow and maybe teach some friends something you know.

Follow this link to throw your juggling hats in the ring and join the club of IJA Festival Workshop Instructors: forms.gle/Pq7Hsg6yFJZ1fMfYA.

IJA Board nominations deadline 11:59pm PT, May 15, 2023  by Martin Frost and Afton Benson

Nominations are open for the IJA Board of Directors.  The Board election will take place this summer.  The IJA‘s mission is to “render assistance to fellow jugglers”, and serving on the IJA Board of Directors is an excellent way to do that!

Many different skills are useful when serving on a board, as are many points of view.  Whether you’re a graphic designer, nurse, car salesperson, performer, parent, banker, or whatever, if you’ve got a passion for making projects happen, nominate yourself for the IJA Board of Directors!  The IJA Board could particularly benefit from members with experience in communications/marketing, design, or investment, though that is not a requirement for being on the Board.

The IJA Board of Directors manages the IJA for the benefit of all IJA members.  This is a nonprofit board and is comprised of seven people, with Board Members serving two-year terms.  Approximately half of the seats are up for election each year.

Board Members are asked to meet in person at the Annual General Meeting at the IJA Festival, typically held in the summer, and to attend two online Board meetings each month.  Board Members are expected to communicate regularly by email and to spend some hours each week in support of the IJA.

All IJA Board Members are legally responsible as fiduciaries in: setting the IJA‘s goals and policies; managing IJA programs and financials; overseeing persons performing work for or on behalf of the IJA; and ensuring the overall success of such goals, policies, and programs.  Board Members must act in good faith and in the best interest of the IJA at all times.  The IJA maintains Director and Officer Liability insurance for Board Members and Officers.  Each Board nominee must be an IJA Member in good standing.

For more information on how to apply or nominate someone visit: juggle.org/business/nominations.

Thank you for your support of the IJA!

2024 IJA Festival Director — Call for letters of interest for the 77th annual fest
by Afton Benson, IJA Treasurer

Green Bay

The 2024 IJA festival will be held July 8-14, in Green Bay, Wisconsin (USA).  The IJA would like to hear from individuals who are interested in taking on the role of Festival Director for the Green Bay fest.

2023 IJA World Joggling Championships (both virtual and in-person)
by Sterling Franklin

Joggling makes its return to the in-person IJA Festival in July, but if you can’t make it to the festival, there’s still good news!  Joggling this year has both In-Person and Virtual competitions!

The In-Person World Joggling Championships track meet will take place on the Saturday of the IJA Festival, July 22, 2023, at St. Joseph High School (Leighton Stadium) in South Bend, Indiana.  We’re starting bright and early, as the track opens at 7am, and the first events will start around 7:30am.  If you’re at the IJA Festival and want to try out joggling in a quick sprint attempt, we will have a pop-up 3-ball 40-yard dash at the Century Center, set up outside the building on a few of the weekdays of the Festival, weather permitting.

The Virtual competition is open now and lasts through August 22, 2023.

More information about events for both In-Person and Virtual competitions can be found on the IJA Festival website.

For recording questions and rules in specific circumstances, feel free to contact Sterling Franklin or Emily Moore at joggling2023@juggle.org.

Registration for joggling can be done at the IJA Store.

Spread the word, and we hope to see you joggling with us soon!
