IJA Festival workshops  by Ben Muellers and Exuro Piechocki

IJA Festival

Are you planning to come to the IJA Festival?  Consider volunteering to teach a workshop!  Almost all IJA Festival workshops are taught by volunteers just like you who are passionate about sharing knowledge.

Workshops are the best way to break down tricks and concepts so that people can get a firm grasp of the path required to get to the next level.  Video tutorials are an amazing resource, but there’s something different about watching in person and being able to ask questions and get immediate answers.  Seeing breakdowns of what’s hard for one person to wrap their head around is just better than any video tutorial could be, because you can’t personalize a video for every single person.

Mastered a skill?  Found fun things, or have advice the community needs?  Host a workshop!  This is an easy way for you to play a part in the IJA Festival!  Sign up to help the next generation grow and maybe teach some friends something you know.

Follow this link to throw your juggling hats in the ring and join the club of IJA Festival Workshop Instructors: forms.gle/Pq7Hsg6yFJZ1fMfYA.

Planting the Juggling Seed show — call for performers  by Benjamin Domask-Ruh

Hello IJA Members and 2023 Festival attendees!

This year at the IJA Festival we will once again be presenting the “Planting the Juggling Seed” show!

My name is Benjamin, and I will be directing this fun experience for our local community friends in South Bend.  This is a call for anyone interested in being a volunteer performer or teacher!  The first hour is a performance in the library’s presentation area.  The second hour is an open and free juggling lesson for anyone interested in learning!  We are looking for performers and teachers.

Who might be a good fit as a performer?  The idea of this show is to connect with the local community and share a broad overview of all that juggling incorporates: classic toss juggling routines, experimental juggling ideas, flow juggling moments, historical juggling tricks, artistic expression.  If you feel you have a routine or performance that represents one of the many facets of juggling, we would love to hear from you!  You do not have to be a professional full time performer.  But a confident performance piece is welcomed.

Who might be a good fit as a teacher?  Anyone who loves sharing the beginnings of juggling and balance tricks.  Anyone who is patient and encouraging!  The idea of this session is to share the joy and fun facilitated by juggling.  Do you have experience teaching juggling?  Wonderful!  If you are new to teaching juggling, come learn alongside us as we invite this new community into the artform.

Don’t feel you are a good fit for either?  That is okay!  Come join us as an audience member and support your fellow jugglers.

The details:

When: Jul 18, 2023 10am – noon
Where: St. Joe County Public Library
Who: The local South Bend community and Festival Attendees

If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Benjamin Domask-Ruh via yja@juggle.org.

Thank you so much and see you at the festival!

Pre-Festival city walking tour and Pub Crawl — only a few seats left  by Mike Sullivan

Hurry!  Just six spots left in this first-ever pre-festival city walk and pub crawl!

Get in to South Bend on Monday, and then get to know your festival home to start the week!

Join us for a fun, easy walking tour of all our festival venues, some time to explore amazing local historic sites, and a pub crawl along the “main drag” in downtown South Bend!

Led by two South Bend local jugglers, and visiting the top must-see spots around downtown, you’ll get a guided tour of ALL of our juggling spaces in the Century Center, including our Renegade venue, and the spectacularly beautiful Morris Performing Arts Center Theater where the nightly shows and championship competitions will be held.

Then we’ll hop along the central business district and grab some refreshments along the route at two great local South Bend watering holes.  Next, it’s on to the truly incredible Studebaker National Museum and South Bend History Museum and the incredible Oliver Mansion, which are must-see destinations when visiting South Bend.  We wrap up with a final stop for refreshments at the Studebaker Brewing Company, followed by an optional group dinner at the Tippecanoe Place Restaurant in an intimate, historic setting.

Our tour steps off from the DoubleTree hotel lobby at 2pm ET Monday afternoon.  Your ticket includes three draft beers along our pub crawl, and admission to the three fabulous historic venues we’ll visit to wind up our tour.  Our group dinner at the Tippe after the tour is optional.  Tour participants must be 21 years of age or older to enter the pubs along our route.

Space will be limited, so BUY YOUR TICKETS NOW to be in town and ready to join our tour early in the afternoon on Monday!

2023 IJA World Joggling Championships — volunteers needed  by Sterling Franklin

The In-Person World Joggling Championships track meet will take place on the Saturday of the IJA Festival, July 22nd, 2023, at St. Joseph High School (Leighton Stadium) in South Bend, Indiana.  As we are expecting good turnout, if you have the time and passion to volunteer at the track, we would love the help!

We are looking for more helpers in the following areas, whether for the full Joggling meet or for a portion of it:

  • First Aid
  • Timing and Lane Officiating (via stopwatches and/or any automatic timing systems that we end up having at the meet)
  • Carpool Drivers to and from the Track (to the track around 7am, from the track after 12pm, and we also could use flex drivers who can bring people to and from the venue at points mid-meet)
  • Set-up (starting at 7am) and Take-down (ending before 1pm)

Barring any unexpected happenings (e.g., ultra-severe weather), we will run the World Joggling Championships from 7am to 12pm on Saturday, July 22nd.  Warm-ups will conclude at around 7:45am, and announcements and events will start soon after.

Remember also — if you can’t make the in-person IJA Festival, we still have a Virtual Joggling Competition separate from the in-person meet with a full event list for you to tackle!  Registration for both in-person and virtual competitions can be found at our IJA online store here: ym.juggle.org/store/ListProducts.aspx?catid=442033. And for those at the festival, we hope to see many of you there, whether joggling or helping out!  If you have any questions about volunteering specifics, email Sterling Franklin at joggling2023@juggle.org.  Thank you!

EJC 2023 — in Poland!  by European Juggling Association

The 45th EJC 2023 wiil be in Lublin, Poland.

The dates stay the same: 29th July – 6th August 2023.

As you may be aware, unfortunately the planned EJC for 2023, which was to be held in Ireland, had to be cancelled due to difficulties with insurance.  This was after many years of very hard work and tenacity by the Irish team, so we extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to them.

After a European wide community appeal we are extremely happy to inform you that the European Juggling Convention will be coming for the third time to the beautiful city of Lublin in Poland, where the 35th and 40th editions of the EJC were held.

With very short notice and an intense period of hard work, Fundacja Sztukmistrze (the same team behind EJC 2012 and 2017) have secured the same venues as the previous conventions.  That is, within a beautiful park, with very large halls adjacent (combined 11000 square meters!) and an awesome gala venue.

The Polish team are now working with the Irish team to join forces and give you the best EJC possible.

Huge thanks to all those who have secured this last-minute solution. Please be sure to show your appreciation if you see them, and you can also help out by volunteering your time and supporting them whilst at the event.

EJC pre-registration is available now.

San Diego Circus Festival and the IJA  by Matan Presberg, IJA Marketing Director

San Diego Circus Festival is partnering with the IJA to provide discount codes for Student Stars and Future Stars!  Hosted by San Diego Circus Center in August, the San Diego Circus Festival is an event where artists make connections, elevate their careers, and celebrate the magic of circus! Over five exciting days artists will converge to perform in front of live audiences and receive invaluable feedback from industry professionals.  Any IJA member who wants to compete at the festival will be able to receive 15% off their ticket.

The Student Stars category requires no audition and is for serious recreational adults and/or youth that have yet to transition into the emerging talent space.  Anyone will be accepted to compete.  Register here and use discount code IJA at checkout.  The San Diego Circus Festival STUDENT STAR category welcomes students to compete in all circus disciplines in a peer group of similar age.

The Future Stars category has an audition process.  Information and application form can be found here. Enter in your application that you are with the IJA, and if you are accepted to compete you will be sent a discount code.  The FUTURE STARS competition features selected performers taking part in a cabaret style show.

We’re excited for this partnership and hope to see IJA members competing at the festival!
