Forgotten Juggling Props: Wagon Wheels

I have written extensively about juggling props that were once quite popular but are now more or less forgotten as ever being used in the artform. Examples of these include table lamps, hand bells, and tobacco pipes. Another such forgotten prop is the subject of this article: wagon wheels. Wagon, cart, or chariot wheels were balanced, spun on poles, and toss juggled. Let’s take a look at their use as a juggling prop.

Perhaps surprisingly, the use of wagon wheels by jugglers goes back to at least the fourteenth century, as the woodcut below demonstrates.

In the early 1880s, Mr. Adams astounded audiences by balancing 6 wagon wheels at one time.

One of the jugglers who used wagon wheels to the greatest extent was Paul Conchas, who began his career in 1895. Conchas, a German who was born Paul Huett around 1875, was a master performer and promoter. He was known as “the Military Hercules,” wearing an elite Prussian Household Guard uniform, complete with eagle-crowned helmet. For much of his career, he was assisted by the well-known comedian Julius Newmann, the brother of famed juggler Selma Braatz. Conchas was a major star in the United States. In 1904, both Conchas and his rival, fellow German strongman juggler Paul Spadoni, were booked to perform for an extended time in New York City. A feud broke out between the two that was the talk of the town for a short period. You can read about the feud by clicking here. Conchas died in New York City in 1916 as a result of a liver ailment.

As you can see in the following images, not only did Conchas balance multiple wheels, but he even toss juggled three of them.

Severus Schaffer would balance a large wagon wheel atop an upended chair on his head while spinning both the wheel and chair. He first performed this in New York City on August 27, 1894.

Conchas and Schaffer were not the only strongman juggler of the late 1800s or early 1900s to utilize wagon wheels, as can see in the following photos and illustrations.

Wagon wheels were used by some gentleman jugglers as well, such as Mr. Kelly.

As automobiles and trucks replaced wagons and carts, the use of wagon wheels by jugglers dropped off dramatically. However, they were still occasionally used. You can see George Moore spinning a wagon wheel on a pole in the 1940s at the end of the following video.

Another mid-twentieth century juggler known for his use of a wheel was Henry Vadden. He would spin one on a pole balanced on his chin, knock away the pole, and catch the spinning wheel on a spiked helmet he wore.

In the 1990s, the Marghonas recreated an old-style chariot wheel act, which you can see below. Steve Rawlings now owns these props.

While I’m not aware of any current jugglers using wagon wheels, Thomas Staath performs an act juggling and manipulating tires.

忘れ去られたジャグリング道具「馬車の車輪」

「昔はよく使われていたが、今では忘れ去られているジャグリング道具」について、筆者はいくつも記事を書いてきた。例として、テーブルランプ、ハンドベル、喫煙用パイプなどについてである。今回取り上げるのは、そんな忘れ去られた道具のひとつ、馬車用の車輪だ。かつてこの車輪は、バランス、ポールの上での回転、トスなど、さまざまなジャグリングに使われていた。今回は、ジャグリング道具としての車輪の使い方を見てみよう。

意外かもしれないが、ジャグラーが車輪を使用し始めた歴史は、下の木版画が示すように、少なくとも 14 世紀までさかのぼる。

1700 年代には、綱渡りをするジャグラーが、演技の一部として車輪によるバランス芸を披露することがあった。

特に車輪を使ったジャグラーとして有名なのは、1895 年にキャリアをスタートさせたポール・コンチャス（Paul Conchas）である。コンチャスは 1875 年頃に、本名　Paul Huett として生まれたドイツ人。パフォーマーとしてもプロモーターとしても活躍した。プロイセンの近衛兵の制服を着用し、イーグルクラウンのついたヘルメットをかぶった彼は「ミリタリー・ヘラクレス」と呼ばれた。彼のキャリアの大半では、コメディアンのユリウス・ニューマン（Julius Newmann）（有名なジャグラー、セルマ・ブラーツ（Selma Braatz）の兄弟）に支えられて仕事をしていた。コンチャスは、米国における大スターだった。1904 年、コンチャスと、ライバルである同じドイツのジャグラー、ポール・スパドーニ（Paul Spadoni）が共にニューヨークで長期間の公演を行うことになった。やがてこの 2 人の間には確執が生まれ、短期間ではあるが話題となった。この確執についてはこちら（英語）で読むことができる。コンチャスは 1916 年に肝臓病を原因としてニューヨークで亡くなった。

以下の画像でわかるように、コンチャスは複数の車輪をバランスするだけでなく、3 つを使ってトスジャグリングも行っていたことがわかる。

セヴェルス・シャファー（Severus Schaffer）は、巨大な車輪を逆さにした椅子の上に置き、頭でバランスをとりながら車輪と椅子の両方を回す、という曲芸を行っていた。これが最初に披露されたのはニューヨークシティで、1894 年 8 月 27 日のことだった。

ストロングマンジャグラーとして 1800 年代後半、1900 年代初頭に車輪をジャグリングしていたのは、コンチャスとシャファーだけではない。以下の写真やイラストでその他のジャグラーたちを紹介する。

車輪は、ジェントルマンジャグラーにも使用されていた。ミスター・ケリー（Mr. Kelly）がそのひとりだ。

自動車やトラックが普及し馬車に取って代わると、馬車の車輪がジャグラーに使用されることも劇的に少なくなった。だがまったく使用されなくなったわけではない。1940 年代、ジョージ・ムーア（George Moore）というジャグラーがポールの上で馬車の車輪を回す様子が、以下動画の最後の方で映されている。

他に 20 世紀中頃のジャグラーで車輪を使用していたのは、ヘンリー・ヴァデン（Henry Vadden）である。顎に乗せたポールの上で車輪を回し、ポールをはたき落として、回る車輪をヘルメットの上のスパイクでキャッチする、というものだった。

1990 年代に、マーゴナス（Marghonas）が昔ながらの馬車用車輪を使った演技を披露する様子が以下の動画で確認できる。現在この道具はスティーブ・ローリングス（Steve Rawlings）が所持している。

筆者が知る限り、現代のジャグラーで馬車の車輪を使用しているジャグラーはいないが、トマ・スタース（Thomas Staath）が、タイヤを使ったマニピュレーションやジャグリングをしている。
