Further Experiments with Bob Bramson’s Wooden Hoops

I often bring something to the IJA Festival for jugglers to try. A couple of times I brought the Chaos Clubs, which are the world’s most difficult clubs to juggle. You can see videos of the Chaos Clubs being attempted below.

As the 2022 IJA Festival was getting closer, I saw online that a number of talented hoop jugglers / rollers were going to be attending the fest. This gave me an idea. I decided to bring a set of three of Bob Bramson’s wooden hoops. If you don’t know who Bob Bramson is, then you’re in for a treat. He is the most famous and the most talented (along with Howard Nichols, who is considered his equal) hoop rolling juggler of all time. Let’s take a look at Bob using his hoops in performance.

Bob had donated nine of his wooden hoops to the Museum of Juggling History and I had a set of three large ones not currently on display. Therefore, I decided to bring them along for hoop jugglers to try at the fest. These are much heavier than modern plastic hoops and feature a concave outer edge rather than a convex edge.

At the 2022 IJA Festival, Callum Baker, Fer Sumano, Cameron Ford, Stacey Strange, and Amy Wieliczka all tried out Bob Bramson’s hoops. You can click here to read about and see what they were able to do with them.

Well, as the 2023 IJA approached, I saw that an even larger contingent of hoop jugglers were attending, so I decided to bring the Bramson hoops again for others to try out. Below are the videos that resulted from these attempts. Keep in mind that these wooden hoops are much heavier and much more difficult to use than the plastic hoops that these jugglers are used to.

Abi Lindsey is a well-known and talented hoop juggler from Denver, Colorado. You can see her skills in the following videos.

That Hoop Guy (Mike Hayataka) wowed the Flow Show audience this year and gave the Bramson hoops a try.

Another Flow Show performer was The Hoop Doc (Alli Hart). She received a great response to her act.

Kenzey Simper performed in the Welcome Show this year and tried the Bramson hoops for the first time.

Lilly Gerstner gave the Bob Bramson hoops a try with good results.

Stacey Strange was the only person who tried the Bramson hoops both last year and this year. Last year she did floor rolling, but decided to try body rolling this time.

As all these hoop artists found, Bob Bramson’s heavier wooden hoops are a challenge to use. That makes his accomplishments with them all the more impressive. I’m so glad to see that hoop rolling / juggling has made such a wonderful resurgence. For a while, it seemed as though the art form was going to die out completely.

ボブ・ブラムソンの木製フープふたたび

ジャグラーに試してもらいたい道具を IJA フェスティバルに持っていくことがよくある。ジャグリングをするのが世界一難しいクラブ「カオス・クラブ」を持って行ったこともある。カオス・クラブのジャグリングに挑戦している様子は、以下の動画。

2022 年の IJA フェスティバルに行く前、名の知れたフープジャグラーやフープローラーが参加することをネットで知ったのだが、そこで思いついた。ボブ・ブラムソン（Bob Bramson）の木製フープを 3 セット持っていこう、と。ボブ・ブラムソンをご存じない方は、この機会にぜひご覧いただきたい。彼は史上最も有名で偉大な（同格とされるハワード・ニコルズ（Howard Nichols）に並ぶ）フープジャグラーなのだ。パフォーマンスでフープをジャグリングしている様子はこちら。

ボブ・ブラムソンには、ジャグリング歴史博物館に 9 本の木製フープを寄贈してもらっている。そこで、このフープをジャグリングフェスティバルに持っていき、フープジャグラーに試してもらった。現代のプラスチック製フープよりもはるかに重く、外縁が凸面ではなく凹面になっていることが特徴である。

2022年のIJAフェスティバルで、カラム・ベイカー、フェル・スマノ、キャメロン・フォード、ステイシー・ストレンジ、エイミー・ヴィエリツカがこのボブ・ブラムソンのフープを試しているのだが、彼らが見せてくれた技はこちらの記事でみることができる。

2023 年の IJA フェスが近づくにつれ、フープジャグラーの参加者がさらに増えていることがわかったので、他の人にも試してもらおうと再びブラムソンフープを持参することにした。以下は、新たな挑戦者たちによるビデオ。このフープは、一般的なプラスチック製のフープよりもはるかに重く、ずっと使いにくいということを念頭に見ていただきたい。

アビ・リンゼイ（Abi Lindsey）はコロラド州デンバー出身の有名なフープジャグラー。以下のビデオで彼女の技を見ることができる。

ザット・フープ・ガイ（マイク・ハヤタカ = Mike Hayataka）は、今年のフロー・ショウで観客を沸かせた。

フロウ・ショーではもうひとり、フープ・ドック（アリ・ハート = Alli Hart）というパフォーマーが活躍。彼女の演技には大きな反響があった。

ケンジー・シンパー（Kenzey Simper）は今年ウェルカムショーに出演したパフォーマー。今回、初めてブラムソン・フープに挑戦した。

リリー・ゲルストナー（Lilly Gerstner）もボブ・ブラムソンフープに挑戦し、とても綺麗に技を見せてくれた。

ステイシー・ストレンジ（Stacey Strange）は、昨年も今年もブラムソン・フープを試した唯一の人物。昨年はフロアでのロール技をしていたが、今回はボディロールに挑戦することに。

以上のフープアーティストは全員感じたと思われるが、ボブ・ブラムソンの重い木製フープは使いこなすのが難しい。それだけに、このフープを実際に演技で使っていたボブ・ブラムソンの偉業はますます際立つ。筆者は、フープ・ローリングやジャグリングの技術が現代において復活を遂げていることが非常に嬉しい。実を言えば、しばらくの間、この技術は完全に廃れたかにも見えたのである。
