George Hurd was one of the greatest jugglers to ever come from Australia. He was born in 1892 and initially worked in Melbourne, sorting, classifying, and grading wool for the textiles industry. He was inspired to become a juggler after seeing his father juggle three oranges. He was later influenced by well-known Australian duo Florence and Martyn, whom you can read about by clicking here. Eventually he honed his self-taught juggling skills enough to make his stage debut in Geelong in the early 1910s. He took his act oversees in 1916, but returned to Australia in 1920 as a headline act in the Fullers’ Theaters and later on the Tivoli circuit. He toured internationally throughout much of the 1920s and 1930s. In 1937, he moved back to Australia and mainly worked there until his retirement in the mid 1950s. He passed away in 1968. He was proud to have been a three-time Royal Command performer.
Hurd had a huge repertoire of tricks and routines and could be contracted to perform at two theaters in same city and not have to duplicate tricks or move props from theater to theater. The photos, illustrations, and incredible video below show his diverse skill set and immense talent. His ball juggling shows some siteswap tricks that were far, far ahead of their time.

He is a Guinness world record holder and 16 time IJA gold medalist. In addition to his juggling pursuits, David is a successful composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and singer as well as the author of twenty-six books. He and his children live in Middletown, OH (USA).
