Gus Raglus

If you’ve heard of the juggler Gus Raglus, I would be very, very surprised. I had barely come across his name in my forty years as a juggler and decade as a juggling historian. Gus Raglus was born Charles Hughes on November 10, 1883 at No. 9 Fox and Grapes Yard, Kirkgate, Leeds, Yorkshire, England, where his parents, John and Elizabeth Hughes, ran a lodging house. His family were originally from Ireland.

Charles learned to juggle while working as a bricklayer, learning to toss and catch balls of baked clay. He practiced this skill for two years while doing masonry work before he decided to enter show business.

He had a nearly 60 year career in show business, beginning as a concertina player under his real name. In 1903, he succeeded his father in the British / American ball bounce juggling duo Robertus and Wilfredo, playing a 16 week season at the London Hippodrome. When he left Robertus and Wildredo, he took the stage name of Gus Raglus. He worked as a tramp juggler and was accused of copying W.C. Fields, whom had copied Jim Harrigan. The following clipping is taken from a March, 1909 issue of Variety.
Three years later, Raglus was still copying Fields’ work, as is indicated in the following Variety clipping from April 1912.
By 1914, Raglus established a comedy ball bounce juggling act and found greater success.
For a time, his assistant was Rich Hayes, whom I wrote about in a recent article that you can read by clicking here. Hayes eventually began a solo career, also working as a comedy ball bouncing juggler.

The two acts were similar enough that Raglus, who had copyrighted his act, sued Hayes for infringement in 1924. You can see a mention of this below, taken from the November 19, 1924 issue of Everyone’s – Incorporating Australian Variety and Show World.
It is unknown what happened regarding the suit. Nevertheless, it is known that Raglus was very successful in Australia, working on the Fullers circuit during the 1920s. He also performed in Europe, North and South America, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. He performed as a juggler for 30 years before switching genres. He finished his career as a “Globe of Death” cyclist at fairs and circuses.
Gus Raglus died on October 28th, 1959 at Brinsworth House, Twickenham, Middlesex, a care home owned by The Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund and Institution (now known as the Royal Variety Charity) and he is buried in an area of Twickenham Cemetery reserved for The Royal Variety Charity.

本名でコンサーティーナの奏者として活動を始め、60 年近いショービジネスのキャリアを積んだ。1903 年、父が結成していた英/米国人からなるボールバウンスジャグリングデュオ、ロベルタス・アンド・ウィルフレード（Robertus and Wilfredo）の後を継ぎ、ロンドン・ヒッポドロームで 16 週間にわたって演技を披露した。以下は、ガスが参加する前のロベルタス・アンド・ウィルフレードの画像である。

ガス・ラグラスという芸名を名乗るようになったのは、ロベルタス・アンド・ウィルフレードを脱退したあとである。トランプ（放浪者）スタイルのジャグラーとなったが、これは W.C. フィールズ（Fields）を真似たものだと非難された。最も、フィールズもまた先達のジム・ハリガン（Jim Harrigan）を真似ている。次の切り抜き記事は、1909 年 3 月号の 「バラエティ（Variety）」誌から引用したものである。

この訴訟の結末については不明である。しかしラグラスは 1920 年代に Fullers circuit で活躍し、豪州で大成功を収めたことが知られている。豪州のみならず、欧州、北南米、アフリカ、ニュージーランドでも公演を行った。30 年間ジャグラーとして演じたのち、パフォーマンスジャンルを変えた。最後はイベントやサーカスで「グローブ・オブ・デス（Globe of Death）」の二輪乗りとしてキャリアを終えた。

ガス・ラグラスは 1959 年 10 月 28 日、バラエティアーティスト慈善基金（The Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund and Institution、現在はロイヤル・バラエティ・チャリティーとして知られている）が所有するケアホーム、ミドルセックスのトゥイッケナムにあるブリンズワースハウス（Brinsworth House）で死亡し、トゥイッケナム墓地のロイヤル・バラエティ・チャリティー専用のエリアに埋葬されている。
