Harry was a successful artist who created tricks and routines that revolutionized the world of magic in his time. Together with his wife, Mildred May, they became one of the most sought-after duos in the entertainment industry.

Harry Rouclere Terhune was born on June 3, 1866, in Paterson, New Jersey. Before entering the world of magic full-time, Harry, at the age of nine, worked in a traveling circus performing various circus techniques such as dog training, gymnastics, juggling, and some magic acts like card reading and illusion, imitating the famous magician Signor Blitz.

Harry was a successful artist who created tricks and routines that revolutionized the world of magic. As a juggler, he worked with the juggler “Nelsonia” around 1880, where he performed in formal attire, earning him the nickname “the fashion collection juggler.” Harry adopted his stage name from his surname. He performed incredible balancing acts such as: balancing a cigar box, balancing a fan in his mouth with five glasses on top, balancing a ball on a stick held in his mouth, balancing a top on a pedestal while spinning another top in his hand, balancing a plate, a bottle, a sword, and a top in his mouth, balancing a dove and bagpipe routine, balancing a lamp on a sword in one hand and a top on a fan in the other, among many others.

Harry gave up juggling and dedicated himself to magic, performing tricks of his own invention and touring the country. Later, he met the singer and dancer Mildred Searing Rouclere (1870-1938), whom he married.

They formed the duo Mildred and Rouclere, also known as the “Mildred Novelty Company.” They performed magic, illusions, mind reading, and other acts. By 1891, the duo had introduced the act of “Psychonotism,” later known as “Mildredism.” Magic researcher Tom Ewing described Mildredism as follows: “Mildred went up on stage and was hypnotized. Harry went down into the audience, where the spectators’ whispered instructions into his ear indicating the actions they wanted Mildred to perform on stage. This could be reading a passage from a book, rearranging the chairs, or reaching out to the audience to find a hidden hairpin. All these requests were carried out perfectly without Harry saying a single word.”

Mildred and Rouclere’s act was so successful that they headlined most of the shows in the theaters where they performed. An article in The Sphinx, the magazine for magic enthusiasts, reported that they worked for 62 consecutive weeks.

In 1900, Mildred and Rouclere retired from entertainment and worked managing a hotel they owned in Ridgewood, New Jersey, which primarily served as a lodging for magicians on tours, at events, or conventions in the United States. Later, Harry became an airplane pilot.

Mildred died on January 7, 1938, and Harry on February 3, 1943. Their legacy continues to be honored in the magic community worldwide.

Harry Rouclere – malabarista y mago

Harry fue un exitoso artista que creó trucos y rutinas que revolucionaron el mundo de la magia en su tiempo. Junto a su esposa, Mildred May, lograron ser uno de los dúos más apetecidos de la industria del entretenimiento.

Harry Rouclere Terhune nació el 3 de junio de 1866 en Paterson, Nueva Jersey. Antes de entrar al mundo de la magia a tiempo completo, Harry, a los nueve años, trabajó en un circo ambulante con diferentes técnicas de circo como adiestramiento de perros, gimnasia, malabarismo, y con algunos actos de magia como lectura de cartas e ilusionismo imitando al famoso mago Signor Blitz.

Como malabarista, trabajó en el equipo del malabarista “Nelsonia” alrededor de 1880, donde se presentaba usando traje de etiqueta por lo que lo llamaron “el malabarista de la colección de modas.

Harry adoptó el nombre artístico de su primer apellido. Realizó increíbles trucos de equilibrio como: equilibrio de cigar box, equilibrio de un abanico en la boca con 5 copas arriba, equilibrio de una pelota con un palo sostenido con la boca, equilibrio de una peonza encima de un pedestal al tiempo girando otra peonza en la mano, equilibrio con la boca sosteniendo un plato, una botella una espada y una peonza, equilibrio de la rutina de palomas y gaitas, balance de una lampara encima de una espada en una mano y de una peonza encima de un abanico en la otra, entre muchos más.

Harry dejó el malabarismo y se dedicó a la magia donde realizó trucos de su invención con los cuales hizo una gira por todo el país. Posteriormente, conoció a la cantante y bailarina Mildred Searing Rouclere (1870-1938) con quien se casó.

Ambos formaron el dúo Mildred y Rouclere, conocido también como “Mildred Novelty Company”. Realizaban magia, ilusionismo, lectura de mente, entre otros. Para 1891, el dúo introdujo el acto del “Psiconotismo”, denominado posteriormente como “Mildredismo“. El investigador de la magia, Tom Ewing, describió el Mildredismo de la siguiente manera: “Mildred subió al escenario y fue hipnotizada. Harry bajó al público, donde los espectadores le susurraban instrucciones al oído indicando las acciones que querían que Mildred realizara en el escenario. Esto podía ser leer un pasaje de un libro, reorganizar las sillas o acercarse al público para encontrar una horquilla escondida. Todas estas peticiones se cumplían a la perfección sin que Harry dijera una sola palabra”.

El acto de Mildred y Rouclere fue tan exitoso que encabezaron gran parte de las programaciones en los teatros donde llegaban Un artículo de The Sphinx, el magazine para los aficionados de la magia, informó que trabajaron 62 semanas seguidas.

En 1900, Mildred y Rouclere se retiraron del entretenimiento y trabajaron en la administración de un hotel de su propiedad en Ridgewood, Nueva Jersey, que servía principalmente para recibir a los magos en giras, eventos o convenciones en Estados Unidos. Mas tarde, Harry se convirtió en piloto de avión.

Mildred falleció el 7 de enero de 1938, y Harry el 3 de febrero de 1943. Su legado sigue siendo honrado en la comunidad de magos del mundo.
