Gabriel Estrada Gómez was born in San José, Costa Rica, on August 8, 1998. He is one of the most well-known jugglers from his country. From an early age he has been characterized by his skills in juggling and other disciplines. His fame exploded when he began to perform with the Circo Hermanos Suarez, or Suarez Entertainment (one of the oldest circuses in Mexico). He won the gold medal at the prestigious IJA IRC (IJA Regional Competition). At a young age, he has several acheivments. Estrada is still current, performing virtual shows with his character, “Matiche,” recording tricks for digital platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. He currently lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Tell me about your tastes.

Before being an artist, I was very athletic. I played volleyball, tennis, and skated. I was in several national competitions, but something was missing, I did not like training for competitions.

How long have you juggled? How did you learn?

At the age of 11 my grandmother took me to the Tihany Circus, and that was my first contact with the circus. A year later I was curious to try everything I had seen in the circus, and it was there that I got to know juggling at the age of 12. At first it was just another hobby, but the more I entered the performance art world, the more I fell in love.

Tell me any anecdote that happened to you juggling.

I was always an extremely shy child, and without a doubt the circus made me able to find my essence and express everything I wanted.

How was the process for creating your show “Show Gabriel Estrada?”

My first juggling show was at my school’s vacation outing party. That same year, barely knowing the basic tricks, I went to offer my “show” to a shopping center that was going to celebrate its anniversary. At the age of 12, I convinced the owner to hire me. I charged him 10,000 colones ($20), and that was my first paid show. The owner was struck by the fact that a 12 year old boy came to his office to offer him a show; clearly he agreed to support me. This is how my show evolved.

Tell us about your IRC experience. You won! How was that feeling? What happened in your professional career after the IJA gold medal?

IRC was an experience that made me understand how important it is to professionalize a juggling act. That day my intention was not to win; I just wanted to experience the feeling of being in a juggling competition and enjoy the moment, since it was the first Central American competition of the IJA. Without a doubt, a before and after was being marked in the juggling scene in Costa Rica, and I wanted to be part of that. Upon receiving the award, I felt great satisfaction, not because of the position or because of the award, but because it was a sign to me that the whole process had not been in vain.

In the competition I had managed to stand out for my style and I wanted to exploit that in my future shows, so knowing the importance of the image of an artist, I decided to invest little by little in my costumes, props, taking care of details of the music, etc. Working on these details, many doors were opened for me in the entertainment market in Costa Rica, and that made it easier for me to get the capital to continue investing in my act.

Tell me about juggling in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica has a lot of talent. The only thing I think is missing is to intensify the professionalism of the art of juggling, but that is in the hand of each one and what they seek to generate with juggling.

How have you been with your juggling workshops in your country?

My juggling workshops were always aimed at beginners and intermediate, since what I was looking for was to be able to share information that I never had in my beginnings, and with this facilitate the process of those who were starting.

You were also on Trick of the Month. How was the recording in such beautiful places?

The Trick of the Month video was a really fun experience as it was getting out of my comfort zone. The process was very natural and the result a reflection of what I felt at that age. Also, recording it in public places was very gratifying due to peoples’ reactions.

Tell me about your performances with Circo Hermanos Suárez.

My experience at the Hermanos Suarez Circus was magical. Since I was a child, my dream was to present my show in a circus. Every morning I felt like I was daydreaming being able to train and perform under a tent. The circus gave me a lot of opportunities for learning, anecdotes, and the pride of running on stage with the flag of my country.

What are your favorite jugglers?

I can say that I like them all. Each one has their essence and charm. But without a doubt there are two jugglers who have always motivated me a lot, not only because of their level, but also because of what they project. They are: Wally Eastwood and Paul Ponce.

What is your favorite trick?

I don’t have a favorite trick. But without a doubt I really enjoy seeing the reaction of the public when I do 3 clubs in triples (fast).

How has the pandemic treated you?

This pandemic has been a rollercoaster of emotions and situations. But I have tried to get the most out of it. The pandemic has left me with many show ideas that I hope to develop soon. And also in this quarantine a new virtual character called “Matiche” was born.

Give some advice to eJuggle readers.

Never stop dreaming. Dreams are like juggling: they may fall apart many times but we always have to pick them up with the hope that the next attempt will come out more successful. Each drop is learning and a step closer to reaching the goal.

 

 

Entrevista a Gabriel Estrada

Gabriel Estrada Gómez nació en San José, Costa Rica, el 8 de agosto de 1998. Es uno de los malabaristas más representativos de su país. Desde temprana edad se caracterizó por sus habilidades en el malabarismo y otras disciplinas. Su fama estalló cuando comenzó a actuar junto al Circo Hermanos Suarez, o Suarez Entertainment (uno de los circos más antiguos de México). Ganó la medalla de oro en la prestigiosa competencia IRC (IJA Regional Competitions). A su corta edad, ya cuenta con varios reconocimientos. Estrada sigue vigente: realiza shows virtuales con su personaje “Matiche”, graba sus trucos para las plataformas digitales como Instagram, TikTok. Actualmente vive en Filadelfia, Pennsylvania.

Háblame de tus gustos.

Antes de ser artista era muy deportista. Jugué Voleibol, tenis, y practicaba Skate. Estuve en varias competencias nacionales, pero algo me faltaba, no me gustaba entrenar para competir por un puesto.

¿Hace cuánto haces malabares? ¿Cómo aprendiste?         

A los 11 años mi abuela me llevó al Circo Tihany,  y ese fue mi primer contacto con el circo. Un año después me entró la curiosidad por intentar todo lo que había visto en el circo, y fue ahí donde conocí los malabares a los 12 años. Al inicio fue un hobbie más, pero entre más entraba al mundo del arte más me enamoraba.

Dime alguna anécdota que te haya pasado en los malabares.

Siempre fui un niño extremadamente tímido, y sin duda el circo me hizo poder encontrar mi esencia y expresar todo lo que quería.

Cómo fue el proceso para la creación de tu show “Show Gabriel Estrada”.

Mi primer show de malabares fue en la fiesta de salida de vacaciones de mi escuela. Ese mismo año apenas sabiendo los trucos básicos, me fui a ofrecer mi “show” a un centro comercial que iba a celebrar su aniversario. Yo, con 12 años, convencí al dueño de contratarme. Le cobré 10.000 colones (20 dólares), y ese fue mi primer show pagado. Al dueño le llamó la atención que un niño de 12 años llegara a su oficina a ofrecerle un show; claramente él aceptó apoyarme. Así fue evolucionando mi show.

Háblanos de la experiencia en la IRC ¡Ganaste! Cómo fue esa sensación. Qué pasó en tu carrera profesional luego de la medalla de oro de la IJA.

La IRC fue una experiencia que me hizo entender lo importante que es profesionalizar un acto de malabarismo. Ese día mi intención no era ganar, yo solo quería experimentar la sensación de estar en una competencia de malabarismo y disfrutar el momento, ya que era la primera competencia centroamericana de la IJA. Sin duda se estaba marcando un antes y un después en la escena del malabarismo en Costa Rica, y yo quería ser parte de eso. Al recibir el premio sentí una satisfacción muy grande, no por el puesto ni por el premio, sino porque era una señal para mí de que todo el proceso no había sido en vano.

En la competencia había logrado destacar por mi estilo y quería explotar eso en mis futuros shows, así que sabiendo la importancia de la imagen de un artista decidí invertir poco a poco en mis vestuarios, aparatos, cuidar detalles de la música, etc. Trabajando en estos detalles se me abrieron muchas puertas en el mercado de entretenimiento en Costa Rica, y eso me facilitó poder conseguir el capital para seguir invirtiendo en mi acto.

Dime acerca del malabarismo en Costa Rica.

Costa Rica hay mucho talento. Lo único que pienso que falta es intensificar el profesionalismo del arte del malabarismo, pero eso está en la mano de cada uno y lo que busque generar con los malabares.

¿Cómo te ha ido con tus talleres de malabares en tu país?

Mis talleres de malabares siempre fueron dirigidos para principiantes e intermedios, ya que lo que buscaba era poder compartir información que yo nunca tuve en mis inicios, y con esto facilitar el proceso de quienes estaban iniciando.

También estuviste en Trick of the Month. ¿Cómo fue la grabación en esos lugares tan hermosos?

El vídeo de Trick of the Month  fue una experiencia muy divertida, ya que fue salir de mi zona de confort. El proceso fue muy natural y el resultado un reflejo de lo que sentía a esa edad. Además que grabarlo en lugares públicos fue muy gratificante por las reacciones de las personas.

Háblame de tus presentaciones con Circo Hermanos Suárez.

Mi experiencia en el Circo Hermanos Suarez fue mágica, ya que desde niño mi sueño era presentar mi show en un circo. Cada mañana sentía que soñaba despierto al poder entrenar y presentarme bajo una carpa. El circo me dejó mucho aprendizaje, anécdotas, y el orgullo de correr en el escenario con la bandera de mi país.

¿Cuáles son tus malabaristas favoritos?

Puedo decir que todos. Cada quien tiene su esencia y encanto. Pero sin duda hay dos malabaristas que siempre me han motivado mucho, no solo por su nivel, sino también por lo que proyectan. Son: Wally Eastwood y Paul Ponce.

¿Cuál es tu truco favorito?

No tengo un truco favorito. Pero sin duda disfruto mucho ver la reacción del público cuando hago 3 clavas en triple giro (rapidez).

¿Cómo te ha tratado la pandemia?

Esta Pandemia  ha sido una montaña rusa de emociones y situaciones. Pero he intentado sacarle el máximo provecho. La pandemia me ha dejado muchas ideas de espectáculos que espero poder desarrollar pronto. Y también en esta cuarentena nació un nuevo personaje virtual llamado “Matiche”.

Da un consejo a los lectores de eJuggle.

Nunca dejen de soñar. Los sueños son como los malabares, caen muchas veces pero siempre los tenemos que levantar con la esperanza que en el siguiente intento nos saldrá. Cada caída es un aprendizaje y un paso más cerca de alcanzar el objetivo. Pura Vida.
