The first IRC in Colombia was held in 2016, within the framework of the Colombian Circus Convention. The winners were: Gold medal: Israel Frutos (Niño Topo, Ecuador). Silver medal: Anderson Pereira Da Silva (Brazil). Bronze medal: Geison Estupiñán (Colombia).

Three years later, in 2019, the IRC returned to Colombia. It was done within the cultural activities of the Circo Entrenubes Festival. On that occasion, the winners were: Bronze medal: Stellar Nebula ft. Álvaro Soto and Santiago Vega (Ecuador). Silver medal: Alejandro “Pulpo” Marín (Colombia). Gold medal: Sebastián Ceballos (Colombia).

Thanks to the management of different circus and juggling groups, the IRC returned to Colombia this year. It was held on April 25, at Teatro de la Confianza, in Manizales. The artists, mostly from Colombia, who were preselected by the IRC jury were: Sebastián Arcila (club juggler), Wayak Circo (acrobatics and juggling), Rodrigo Amado (ball juggler, from Argentina), Jaiki Jumi (hula hoops ), Álvaro Soto (ball juggler, from Ecuador), Yhoan Ferro (traditional juggler), Natalia Díaz (diabolo), Sebastián Ceballos (footbag juggler), Sergio Carreño (ball juggler), Tomás Acevedo (club juggler, from Chile), David Suarez (ball juggler), and Andy Forero (horizontal juggler).

Of those preselected to present their act, two artists did not appear, which were Rodrigo Amado and Yhoan Ferro.

The IRC began with Andy Forero, an artist from Colombia, who presented his horizontal juggling act with balls of lights. The presentation had a problem: some ropes of the rope system that held the balls became tangled. After a while, which destabilized the act and the music, Andy began to present his unique act in Colombia and rarely done in Latin America.

The second artist was David Suarez, from Colombia, with a ball act. The longest part was his three-ball routine, where he explored different throws, balances and manipulations. With successes and falls, David proposed a ball act that is atypical in Colombia when it comes to juggling with balls.

The Chilean Tomás Acevedo was the third artist of the IRC. His act consisted of unicycle juggling. He demonstrated a high technical level of club juggling performed on a unicycle, such as three club backcrosses, 4 club shower, 5 clubs, among others. He showed that it was carried out under the idea of ​​the exhibition, very similar to the exhibitions of the World Juggling Federation. He totally forgot about half of the composition of a circus or juggling act: the scene part.

Jaiki Jumi was the fourth participant. The falls that the hulas had did not allow us to appreciate the complexity of the technical level that he has shown throughout his artistic career, since he is one of the references of hula hoops in Colombia. Jaiki had a low-quality performance by not being able to finish tricks and sequences, but that doesn’t mean his act was a failure.

The fifth participant was Álvaro Soto, from Ecuador. He, along with Nebulosa Estelar and Santiago Vega, participated in several editions of the IRC South America. At IRC 2024, Álvaro did a contemporary juggling ball act. His performance was a mix of space explorations with throws and body balances, plus a low level of technical juggling.

Sebastián Arcila was the sixth participant. He presented a number with clubs. The talent that Sebastián has as a juggler is undeniable. He performed sequences and tricks at a high technical level with such ease that he made his act look effortless. The theater ceiling and lights did not allow him to correctly execute high throw tricks, such as 3 up 180, 3 up pirouette, 744, 753. However, Sebastian’s act seemed like it was intended for a World Juggling Federation exhibition, and not for IRC. It is understood that the IRC not only rates the technical level, but also the performing part of the artists and the quality of the juggling act.

The seventh participant was Sebastián Ceballos, who holds the title of champion in the 2019 IRC. His act, which combines juggling, footbag and rope jumping, proposes different forms of manipulation of objects that are not common in the juggling community of Colombia. Ceballos’ presentation took place with strings and balls of lights, with electronic music that went to the rhythm that Ceballos showed to the audience.

Sergio Carreño was the artist who followed Ceballos. He presented his ball act with roots in traditional ball acts. He added balance structures that served as scenery, which gave versatility to the act. You can tell it’s a juggling act in the making.

The troop of circus artists, Wayak Circo, were the ninth participants. The group is made up of mostly young acrobats. The event was clean from start to finish; worth seeing at circus festivals. However, the IRC is an event that judges juggling acts itself. The juggling that Wayak presented was low level, since they were passing without considerable complexity. What added difficulty was the acrobatics they added when presenting it.

Natalia Diaz was in charge of closing the IRC presentations. Her act, The Dragon Awakens, is a tribute to diabolo customs in China. Natalia shows variations of the diabolo that are rarely seen in Latin America, such as the monóbolo or the dragon’s tail. Her act was the cleanest of all as she did not record any fall errors, as announced by the IRC juries and presenters.

The winners and controversies

First place: Sebastián Ceballos.

Second place: Wayak Circo.

Third place: Natalia Diaz.

Fourth place: Sebastián Arcila

Fifth place: Andy Forero.

The result of the IRC Colombia 2024 was controversial, according to several sources I consulted. There was annoyance over the way the IRC judges were chosen. They chose some in a short time and several of them did not know how to juggle. “I found no guarantees to be able to comfortably perform at the IRC,” says a juggler.

Gracias a la gestión de diferentes colectivos de circo y malabarismo la IRC regresó a Colombia. Se hizo el 25 de abril, en Teatro de la confianza, en Manizales. Los artistas, en su mayoría de Colombia, que fueron preseleccionados por el jurado IRC fueron: Sebastián Arcila (malabarista de clavas), Wayak Circo (acrobacia y malabares), Rodrigo Amado (malabarista de balones, de Argentina), Jaiki Jumi (hula hoops), Álvaro Soto (malabarista de pelotas, de Ecuador), Yhoan Ferro (malabarista tradicional), Natalia Díaz (diábolo), Sebastián Ceballos (malabarista de footbag), Sergio Carreño (malabarista de balones), Tomás Acevedo (malabarista de clavas, de Chile), David Suarez (malabarista de pelotas), y Andy Forero (malabarista horizontal).

De los preseleccionados para presentar su acto, dos artistas no se presentaron, que fueron Rodrigo Amado, y Yhoan Ferro.

La IRC comenzó con Andy Forero, artista de Colombia, quien presentó su acto de malabarismo horizontal con pelotas de luces. La presentación tuvo un problema: se enredaron unas cuerdas del sistema de cuerdas que sostenían las pelotas. Pasado un tiempo, que desestabilizó el acto y la música, Andy puso presentar su acto único en Colombia y pocas veces hecho en Latinoamérica.

El segundo artista fue David Suarez, de Colombia, con un acto de pelotas. La parte que más duró fue su rutina de tres pelotas, donde exploró diferentes lanzamientos, equilibrios y manipulaciones. Con aciertos y caídas, David propuso un acto de pelotas que es atípico en Colombia cuando se habla de malabarismo con pelotas.

El chileno Tomás Acevedo fue el tercer artista de la IRC. Su acto consistió en malabarismo de monociclo. Demostró un alto nivel técnico de clavas ejecutados encima de un monociclo, como backcross de tres clavas, shower de 4 clavas, 5 clavas, entre otros. Dejó ver que se realizó bajo la idea de la exhibición, muy similar a las exhibiciones de la World Juggling Federation. Se olvidó totalmente de la mitad de la composición de un acto de circo o malabarismo: la parte de la escena.

Jaiki Jumi fue la cuarta participante. Las caídas que tuvieron los hulas no permitieron apreciar la complejidad del nivel técnico que ha mostrado a lo largo de su carrera artística, pues es una de las referentes del hula hoops en Colombia. Jaiki tuvo una presentación de baja calidad al no poder terminar trucos y secuencias, pero no traduce en que su acto fuera un fracaso.

El quinto participante fue Álvaro Soto, de Ecuador. Él, junto a Nebulosa Estelar y Santiago Vega, participaron en varias ediciones de la IRC Sudamérica. En la IRC 2024, Álvaro hizo un acto de pelotas de malabarismo contemporáneo. Su presentación fue una mezcla de exploraciones del espacio con lanzamientos y equilibrios corporales, más un bajo nivel técnico de malabares.

Sebastián Arcila fue el sexto participante. Presentó su número de clavas. Es innegable el talento que tiene Sebastián como malabarista. Hizo secuencias y trucos a un nivel técnico alto con tanta facilidad que hizo parecer que su acto fuera sencillo. El techo del teatro y las luces no le permitieron ejecutar correctamente trucos de lanzamientos altos, como 3up 180, 3up piruette, 744, 753. Sin embargo, el acto de Sebastián pareció que fue pensado para una exhibición de la World Juggling Federation, y no para la IRC. Se entiende que la IRC no solo califica el nivel técnico, sino también la parte escénica de los artistas y la calidad del acto de malabarismo.

El séptimo participante fue Sebastián Ceballos, quien ostenta el título de campeón en la IRC del 2019. Su acto, que junta malabares, footbag y salto a la cuerda, propone diferentes formas de manipulación de objetos que no son comunes en la comunidad de malabaristas de Colombia. La presentación de Ceballos se desarrolló con cuerdas y pelotas de luces, con música electrónica que iba al ritmo que Ceballos le mostraba al público.

Sergio Carreño fue el artista que le siguió a Ceballos. Presentó su acto de balones con raíces en actos tradicionales de balones. Añadió estructuras de equilibrio que le servían de escenografía, lo que le dio versatilidad al acto. Se puede notar que es un acto de malabares en construcción.

La tropa de artistas circenses, Wayak Circo, fueron los novenos participantes. El grupo está conformado por jóvenes acróbatas en su mayoría. El acto estuvo limpio de principio a fin; digno de ver en festivales de circo. El malabarismo que Wayak presentó fue de bajo nivel, pues fueron pases sin una complejidad considerable. Lo que le añadió dificultad fue la acrobacia que le sumaron al presentarlo.

Natalia Diaz fue la encargada de cerrar las presentaciones de la IRC. Su acto, El despertar del dragón, es un tributo a las costumbres del diábolo en China. Natalia muestra variaciones del diábolo que se ven escasamente en Latinoamérica, como el monóbolo o la cola de dragón. Su acto fue el más limpio de todos al no registrar ningún error de caídas, como lo anunciaron los jurados y presentadores de la IRC.

Los ganadores y controversias

Primer puesto: Sebastián Ceballos.

Segundo puesto: Wayak Circo.

Tercer puesto: Natalia Diaz.

Cuarto puesto: Sebastián Arcila

Quinto puesto: Andy Forero.

El resultado de la IRC Colombia 2024 fue polémico, según varias fuentes que consulté. Hubo molestia por la forma de elección de los jurados de la IRC. Eligieron a unos en corto tiempo y varios de ellos no conocían de malabares. “No encontré garantías para poder presentarme cómodamente en la IRC”, dice un malabarista.
