Jan is a virtuoso Swedish artist who from an early age became known for his talent that spanned different artistic, cultural and social disciplines.
He was born on July 19, 1932. His father, Frey Lindblad, was a singer and singing teacher. It is said that Frey taught him basic aspects of music.
As a teenager, in the early 1950s, Jan performed at parks and cultural events as a juggler and whistler.
Although Jan could juggle rings, balanced pedestals, spun balls on his fingers, and balanced canes with only his right hand, among others, what made him known was his talent for whistling and imitating bird sounds from his country.

One of his biggest hits was the song “Shenandoah.” With that and other songs, Jan became one of the best-selling recording artists in 1970, in Sweden.
From 1956, Jan made films dealing with Swedish nature. The films had voice-over and, at first, were not presented to the public. Then, newspapers in some cities in Sweden invited him to screen his films.
One of his main films was “Ett vildmarksrike,” released in 1964. After his success in cinema, Jan worked making short films and series on television. There, the topics were about the biodiversity of South America and India.
Lindblad became a strong advocate of animal rights and was against the keeping of animals in captivity and in cages. He participated in several animal protests. Furthermore, his films conveyed the message of caring for nature.
Jan suffered from type 1 diabetes, which was a factor in his death. While in Sri Lanka filming a wildlife film, he contracted a tropical flu which caused him to be rushed to an emergency hospital. He died days later, on April 5, 1985.
Jan Lindblad left more than 10 films for cinema and television. He wrote about 10 books between 1966 and 1984; then two others were published after his death. He also left behind 13 albums produced by the Snurr Skivan record label.
