As some will know, I have written two articles about juggling in North Korea, which you can read here (the first part) and here (the second part). It was very difficult to find information, photos and videos. Read them, all the parts are very interesting.
On this occasion, I bring two testimonies from Western people who have been able to travel to North Korea and have been able to see what life is like in a country that has so many local regulations as well as sanctions imposed by organizations such as the UN. A country where the nuclear program has been around for many years and that has triggered the rejection of most of the countries in the world, among many other factors. Juggling for The Leader.
Juha Kurvinen
Juha Kurvinen is a Finnish animator, juggler, comedian, and writer. He has 2 world records that consist of juggling with running chainsaws. He has worked as an entertainer and juggler in private events, public events, in many shows for Finnish television and in some other programs such as: “Do not look” and “Good morning Finland,” among many others.
Juha received an invitation to participate in a North Korean circus performance and celebration for Kim Il-Sung’s birthday. Juha accepted, along with 7 companions, among them is the prominent magician Jori A. Kopponen, and some undercover journalists. The group’s trip was quite an adventure. They could see the brainwashing of the government and they managed to observe another culture totally different from their own. It is prohibited for foreign journalists to visit without special authorization, so they had to be very cautious in every action that they took. The lived in great fear. Every day they were persecuted by the North Korean tourist guides, who were in charge of approving and disapproving what the group did within the country. They could not leave the hotel without the guides’ permission. The television is only government programs and mainly anti-imperialist military propaganda programs and speeches by The Leader. The local newscasts talked about the history of North Korea (created by them) and promoted the massive events of the capital of North Korea, Pyongyang.
Juha Kurvinen wrote a book about his experiences, called: Pyongyang Circus. A gig to North Korea. It is a real story, told by its protagonist. Juha decided to write this book because he did not want to forget so many things he saw in North Korea. He preferred that those interested in knowing the whole story should see it in a book. The book was published in Finnish on April 15, 2013 and was translated into English on June 1, 2014. The book can be purchased at Amazon, for a value of $ 2.99.
In the following video we can see the presentation of Juha Kurvinen in the Circus of North Korea, celebrating the birthday of Kim Il-Sung in 1998. Juha was 23 years old, and with this act, he won the 1st Pyongyang art prize.
The last time Juha was in North Korea was in 2004, where he was able to record what North Korean television broadcasts every day of the year. Here is the material.
Juha has told me that the North Korean jugglers are using the Russian style: professional level and juggling technique. They are (mostly) numbers jugglers, and use objects such as balls, clubs and tennis or badminton rackets.

Gerrit Dekker
Gerrit Dekker is another juggler who spent some time in Pyongyang. He wasn’t a performer, but there to carry out rural projects, such as supplying water to farms 50km outside of Pyongyang. In his spare time, though, mostly on Sundays, he juggled in Pyongyang parks with a friend from France, while some children watched them. Unfortunately, Gerrit does not have at hand some photos he took on his trip, such as a large photograph he has with his French friend passing 6 clubs in front of the statue of The Leader. And sadly there is no video either, as Gerrit did not record videos.

Malabaristas en Corea del Norte
Como algunos sabrán, he escrito dos artículos sobre el malabarismo en Corea del Norte, los cuales puedes leer aquí (la primera parte) y aquí (la segunda parte). Fue muy difícil encontrar información, fotos y videos. Léelos, todas las partes son muy interesantes.
En esta ocasión, traigo dos testimonios de personas occidentales que han podido viajar a Corea del Norte y han podido ver cómo es la vida dentro de un país que tiene tantas sanciones impuestas por organismos como la ONU. Un país donde el programa nuclear lleva muchos años y que ha desencadenado el rechazo de la mayoría de los países del mundo, entre muchos otros factores. A continuación veremos estos valiosos testimonios.
Malabares para El líder
Juha Kurvinen
Juha Kurvinen es un animador, malabarista, comediante y escritor finlandés. Tiene 2 records mundiales que consisten en hacer malabares con motosierras encendidas. Ha trabajado como animador y malabarista en eventos privados, eventos públicos, en muchos shows para la televisión finlandés y en algunos programas, como por ejemplo: “No mirar”, “Buenos días Finlandia”, entre muchos otros.
Juha recibió una invitación de participación para actuar en el circo de Corea del Norte, en donde se iba a celebrar el cumpleaños del ya fallecido Kim Il-Sung. Juha acepta, pero va con 7 compañeros, entre ellos está el destacado mago Jori A. Kopponen y algunos periodistas encubiertos. El viaje del grupo fue toda una aventura. Pudieron ver el lavado de cerebro del gobierno; lograron observar otra cultura totalmente distinta a la de ellos. El miedo de los periodistas era algo casi sin control, sabían que en Corea del Norte está prohibida la entrada sin autorización de periodistas extranjeros y por ello, tuvieron que ser muy cautelosos en cada acción que tomaban. Todos los días eran perseguidos por los guías turísticos norcoreanos, quienes se encargaban de aprobar y desaprobar lo que el grupo hiciera dentro del país. No podían salir del hotel sin permiso de los guías. No había televisión; solo transmitían programas de propaganda militar anti imperialista, discursos de El Líder. Los noticieros locales hablaban de la historia de Corea del Norte (creada por ellos mismos) y difundían los eventos masivos de la capital de Corea del Norte, Pyongyang.
De esto trata el libro escrito por Juha Kurvinen, llamado Circo de Pyongyang. Un concierto en Corea del Norte. Es una historia real, contada por su protagonista. Juha decidió escribir este libro debido a que no quería hablar de tantas cosas que vivió en Corea del Norte. Prefirió que los interesados en saberlo leyeran toda la historia completa. El libro fue publicado en finlandés el 15 de Abril de 2013 y fue traducido al idioma inglés el 1 de Junio de 2014. El libro se puede adquirir en Amazon, por un valor de 2.99 dólares.

Juha me ha dicho que los malabaristas norcoreanos están usando el estilo ruso: nivel profesional y técnica de malabares. Son (la mayoría) malabaristas de cantidad, y usan objetos como pelotas, clavas y canastas de tenis. Actualmente hay más variedad de objetos y maneras de hacer malabares, como pelotas de rebote, antipodismo, equilibrios, etc. Algunos payasos también hacen malabares.

Gerrit Dekker
Gerrit Dekker es un malabarista que estuvo en Pyongyang realizando trabajos totalmente diferentes al malabarismo. Gerrit realizó proyectos rurales, como el suministro de agua a las granjas, a 50km de Pyongyang. En sus ratos libres, la mayoría de veces los domingos, hacia malabares en los parques de Pyongyang con un amigo de Francia, mientras los observaban algunos niños. Desafortunadamente, Gerrit no tiene al alcance algunas fotos que tomó en su viaje, como por ejemplo, una gran fotografía que tiene con su amigo francés haciendo pases de 6 clavas al frente de la estatua de El Líder. Tampoco hay videos, ya que Gerrit no grabó videos.
