Montes de María is a subregion of the Colombian Caribbean region comprised of 15 municipalities. There, in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, guerrillas and paramilitaries unleashed homicides, kidnappings, and extortion against the community, which have social repercussions to this day.
In San Juan Nepomuceno, Bolívar Department, one of the 15 municipalities of Montes de María, the Garabatos Show corporation was born: a non-profit organization founded on September 29, 2017, by Gabriel Rua Agamez. The organization seeks to work for children through social circus.
“[The] Garabatos Show was born from a group of young people who were with me in another artistic organization. That organization at the time was more dedicated to environmental issues and entrepreneurship, and I wanted to maintain the artistic theme. I’ve been a clown since 2000 and had been working with that group for some time. When I split up, they joined me, so we started doing recreational activities in different neighborhoods. Then, an organization from Cartagena, which was carrying out a project in Montes de María, invited us to participate in their activities, and it was through someone from that organization that we were motivated to establish ourselves as an organization in 2017,” says Gabriel Rua, a health services administrator, clown, and circus artist.

Garabatos Show carries out social circus projects in neighborhoods of San Juan Nepomuceno, where they teach circus techniques such as clowning, acrobatics, juggling, and others. Katty Serrano attended one of their social interventions, seeing juggling as a way to keep objects moving and strengthen her physical skills.
“(…) I became curious about what the circus and juggling were, and that was the moment I started juggling,” says Katty.
Katty Paola Serrano Ortega was born in San Juan Nepomuceno 18 years ago. She is a student of occupational health and safety, an occupation that she combines with soccer and juggling, which she has been practicing for the past six months. She is one of the first female jugglers from Montes de María. Gabriel Rua, familiar with the circus community in the Colombian Caribbean, ventured out to find other female jugglers in the region: he asked his artist friends, researched other organizations, and found no information on the subject.
Katty’s favorite props are clubs and rings, but she can also do gymnastics and play with hula hoops. However, she doesn’t have her own equipment, as the equipment she trains with belongs to the organization.
Students in the Garabatos Show training process put on artistic presentations for the community, in which Katty participates. With colorful costumes and makeup that match the scenery, Garabatos Show tours neighborhoods, schools, and institutions bringing art to her region.
Katty trains between two and five hours a day, alternating her time with her studies. She also finds inspiration in her juggling by following the lives of jugglers such as Anthony Gatto, Katherine Dines, and Chris Bliss.
“(Juggling) gives me great personal satisfaction. Every time I achieve a new trick, it’s a small victory that motivates me to keep practicing!” explains Katty Serrano.

Montes de María es una subregión del caribe colombiano que la componen 15 municipios de Colombia. Allí, en los años 80, 90 y 2000, los guerrilleros y paramilitares desataron homicidios, secuestros y extorsiones en contra de la comunidad que, hasta el día de hoy, han tenido repercusiones sociales.
En San Juan Nepomuceno, departamento de Bolívar, uno de los 15 municipios de Montes de María, nació la corporación Garabatos Show: una organización sin ánimo de lucro creada el 29 de septiembre de 2017 por Gabriel Rua Agamez. La organización busca trabajar por la niñez a través del circo social.
“Garabatos Show nace de un grupo de jóvenes que estaban conmigo en otra organización artística. Esa organización en su momento se dedicó más a temas ambientales y de emprendimiento, y yo quise conservar el tema artístico. Desde el año 2000 he sido payaso y ya llevaba tiempo trabajando con ese grupo. Al separarme ellos se fueron conmigo, por lo que empezamos a realizar actividades de recreación en los diferentes barrios. Luego, una organización de Cartagena, que hacía un proyecto en Montes de María, nos invita a participar en sus actividades y es a través de alguien de esa organización que nos motiva a crearnos como organización en el 2017”, dice Gabriel Rua, quien es administrador de servicios de la salud, clown y artista circense.

Garabatos Show realiza proyectos de circo social en barrios de San Juan Nepomuceno, donde enseñan técnicas de circo como clown, acrobacia, malabares, y otras. A una de sus intervenciones sociales llegó Katty Serrano, quien vio en los malabares una manera de tener objetos en movimiento y poder fortalecer sus habilidades físicas.
“(…) me dio la curiosidad de qué era eso del circo y eso de hacer malabares, y ese fue el momento en el que empecé hacer malabares”, dice Katty.
Katty Paola Serrano Ortega nació en San Juan Nepomuceno hace 18 años. Es estudiante de seguridad y salud en el trabajo, ocupación que combina con el fútbol y hacer malabares, que practica hace seis meses.
Es una de las primeras mujeres malabaristas de Montes de María. Gabriel Rua, conocedor de la comunidad de circo del Caribe colombiano, se aventuró en la búsqueda de otras mujeres que fueran malabaristas en la región: preguntó a sus amigos artistas, investigó en otras organizaciones, y no encontró información al respecto.
Los objetos favoritos de Katty son las clavas y los aros, pero también puede hacer gimnasia y jugar con hula hoops. Sin embargo, ella no tiene implementación propia, pues los objetos con los que entrena son de la organización.
Los estudiantes de los procesos de formación de Garabatos Show realizan presentaciones artísticas dirigidas a la comunidad, donde Katty participa. Con vestuarios y maquillajes coloridos que combinan con la escenografía, Garabatos Show recorre barrios, colegios, e instituciones llevando arte a su región.
Katty entrena entre 2 a 5 horas al día, alternando su tiempo con el estudio. También, encuentra inspiración en su malabarismo siguiendo la vida de malabaristas como Anthony Gatto, Katherine Dines, y Chris Bliss.
“(el malabarismo) me brinda una gran satisfacción personal. ¡Cada vez que logro un nuevo truco, es una pequeña victoria que me motiva a seguir practicando!”, explica Katty Serrano.
