This series is part of eJuggle, the IJA’s online juggling resource: https://www.juggle.org/ejuggle.
I’m Toru Kurei, a juggler from Yamaguchi, Japan. “Toru Kurei” is a stage name derived from the pronunciation of “cradle” a basic contact juggling technique. In kanji, it is written as “暮井透”
I started pursuing my current contact juggling style ten years ago. I aim to incorporate every part of my body into my performance, including my head, neck, chest, and legs, not just my hands and arms. I am also challenging myself to use as many balls as possible. Those trick patterns hold a cosmic expansiveness that feels almost unimaginable coming from a body whose surface area is smaller than a single tatami mat or even a single bed. I will keep pursuing this theme until my body reaches its limits.
I would like to thank all the jugglers who have influenced my tricks.
I am also deeply grateful to my fellow jugglers in Japan for showing me the many joys of juggling and the joy of human connection while I was practicing alone in Yamaguchi.
And my deepest gratitude to everyone who watched this trick video.
