Her real name was Dora Rogge. She was born in Germany in October 1933 and she was a fifth generation circus performer. Her grandmother, Leopoldine Lange, was an aerial acrobat, and her cousins were tightrope walkers, The Mascotts. At the age of three, Rogana began juggling balls; when she was six she joined the act of her sisters Gerda and Vera Rogge. The three of them created a balancing act on the rolling globe: they ascended and descended a ramp more than a meter high. They also juggled on top of the rolling globe.

While we recognize that some of the indigenous-inspired costuming shown in this article would not be appropriate by today’s standards, we want to convey the history of this artist and her performance skills.

The Rogge sisters, after performing for many years in Germany, came to London to perform in Tom Arnold’s circus in the 1950-1951 season. The fame of the sisters exploded since then. They performed in the main European circuses of the time: Circus Knie, Switzerland; Krone, Germany; Tower Circus, England; Kelvin Hall Circus, UK.

In London they were hired for the tours of Bertram Mills Circus between the years 1955 – 1957. At that time Rogana retired from Sisters Rogge to start her solo artistic career with Bertram Mills Circus. Here she met master of ceremonies Frank Foster Jr, whom she later married. The Rogge sisters replaced Rogana with juggler Juliette Foster, but the trio broke up years later due to the passing of Vera Rogge.

Thanks to the circus director, Cyril Mills, Rogana recreated Marco’s original show. Rogge was the first and only to copy it, and she added another routine to it. Rogana balanced on top of the rolling ball and juggled 5 rings. She gave a 360 degree turn on the ball without stopping juggling. In another routine, she held the butt of a knife in her teeth and balanced a sword on it, tip-to-tip. And on the pommel of the sword was balanced a platter with 4 glasses of champagne. While balancing, she arched her back and ascended a ladder without spilling a drop of champagne. Then she descended the ladder, handed the four goblets to the master of ceremony, and dropped the sharp sword on a table (to prove that the props were not gimmicked/attached). She made this show debut at Bertram Mills Circus in 1961.

In 1963 Rogana left Bertram Mills Circus to pursue her career with her husband Frank. The couple traveled to many countries in the world, appearing in variety theaters and cabarets. Rogana performed at the iconic Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus between 1969-1971. In 1996 she appeared in the famous magazine “The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies” alongside actor Howard Keel.

In Seoul in 1980 while Rogana balanced a sword, it fell on her chest, piercing her lung. She spent five days in the hospital, and then she returned to the stage. “There is nothing new in show business. Swords yes, anyone can act with them. What I did that nobody else did,” said Rogana.

Rogana retired from the stage 20 years ago. Her husband Frank Foster passed away on December 13, 2019, at the age of 93. Currently, 87-year-old Rogana lives in Nokomis, Florida.

 

Rogana – La baronesa del equilibrio

Si bien reconocemos que algunos de los disfraces de inspiración indígena que se muestran en este artículo no serían apropiados para los estándares actuales, queremos transmitir la historia de esta artista y sus habilidades de interpretación.

Las hermanas Rogge, luego de presentarse durante muchos años en Alemania, llegaron a Londres para actuar en el circo de Tom Arnold en la temporada de 1950-1951. La fama de las hermanas estalló desde entonces. En este momento Rogana se retiró de Sisters Rogge para iniciar su carrera artística en solitario, con Bertram Mills Circus. Aquí conoció al maestro de ceremonia Frank Foster Jr, con quien contrajo matrimonio más tarde. Las hermanas Rogge reemplazaron a Rogana con la malabarista Juliette Foster. El trío se separó años más tarde debido al fallecimiento de Vera Rogge.

Gracias al director de circo, Cyril Mills, Rogana recreó el show original del equilibrista Marco. Rogge fue la primera y única en copiarlo, y le agregó otra rutina. Rogana se equilibró encima de la bola rodante e hizo malabares con 5 anillos. Dio un giro de 360 grados en el balón sin parar su malabarismo. Luego puso en el pomo de una espada una base con 4 copas con champaña; colocó la culada de un cuchillo en su boca y en la punta del mismo puso la punta de la espada. Acto seguido, equilibró la espada. Con ese equilibrio subió una escalera; se arqueó hacia atrás sin dejar caer una gota de champaña. Descendió de la escalera, entregó las cuatro copas al maestro de ceremonia, y dejó caer la afilada espada en una tabla. El debut de su espectáculo lo hizo en Bertram Mills Circus en 1961.

En 1963 Rogana abandonó Bertram Mills Circus para hacer su carrera junto a su esposo Frank. La pareja viajó por muchos países del mundo; se presentaron en teatros de variedades y cabarets. Rogana actuó en el emblemático Ringling Bros And Barnum & Bailey Circus entre 1969-1971. En 1996 apareció en la famosa revista “The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies” junto al actor Howard Keel.

En Seúl, en 1980 mientras Rogana equilibraba una espada, esta le cayó en el pecho, perforándole un pulmón. Pasó cinco días en el hospital. Luego volvió a los escenarios. “No hay nada nuevo en el mundo del espectáculo. Espadas sí, cualquiera puede actuar con ella. Lo que hice que nadie más hizo” dice Rogana.

Dora Rogge se retiró de los escenarios hace 20 años. Su esposo Frank Foster falleció el 13 de diciembre de 2019, a los 93 años. Actualmente Rogana, con 87 años, vive en Nokomis, Florida.
