The Art of Plate Waltzing

Plate Waltzing is a rare type of plate spinning  which goes back to at least the mid-1800s. It involves spinning upside down plates or bowls on the surface of a long table.  It may have been invented by famous magician and ventriloquist Signor Blitz (1810-1877). He was famous enough for performing plate waltzing that an actual waltz was written to celebrate his skill. Sheet music for it can be seen below.

Another famous plate waltzing performer was magician John Nevil Maskelyne (1839-1917). He had so much control with his waltzing plates that he could somehow get them to go up and down spiral ramps, as can be seen in the illustration and photo below.

Here is a very brief video of Maskelyne doing plate waltzing.
Well-known juggler and magician Felicien Trewey also performed plate waltzing, as you can see in the following film from 1896.

The following portion of a 1893 poster shows Carlo Romeo doing plate waltzing.

Severus Schaffer performed plate waltzing while balancing on one hand, spinning a bowl on his foot, and balancing a lamp on his head.

William De Lisle included a page of instruction on plate waltzing in his 1910 book The Art of Juggling. You can see this page below.
Here is a wonderful video from 1938 of Charles Ancaster performing the skill.

Here is a video of Kumar Pallana doing plate waltzing.

One well-known master of the skill was plate spinner Erich Brenn. You can see him perform his famous act from the Ed Sullivan Show below. Be sure to watch for his plate waltzing intertwined with his other plate spinning and juggling skills.

As you may have noticed, some plate waltzing performers use their fingers to spin the plates while others, such as Charles Ancaster, use a small stick. It’s best to use plates that are very heavy toward or on the rim and lighter in the middle.

Jean Lemoine, another talented plate spinner, also includes a bit of plate waltzing in his act, as you can see below.

Daniel Gorski is one of only a few modern jugglers who include plate waltzing in their act.

In Albania, plate waltzing is done using a copper pan as part of folk music, where it is combined with percussion and singing.

As we’ve seen, plate waltzing can be a stand alone trick or can be integrated with other juggling skills. So find a plate or bowl with a heavy rim and try out this rare skill.
