Training manual, by Mikhail Rudenko

(Haz clic aquí para español.)

The following training manual may be one of the most complete in juggling, because, in addition to having an excellent training methodology and in-depth and innovative research, it offers recommended nutrition plans and sports disciplines to bring the body to a linear state with the juggling game.

It was designed by the Ukrainian juggler Mikhail Rudenko (known for being the creator of the Russian balls and for being one of the first jugglers to perform the ten-ball multiplex) and written by Pavel Koshel of the United Jugglers Facebook group.

The manual is divided into two stages: About Mikhail Rudenko (which I will omit, as it is a small biography) and My Way of Juggling, which is divided into five sections, which you will see below. If you want to know about Rudenko, I recommend this article, which is one of the most complete.

MY WAY OF JUGGLING – MIKHAIL RUDENKO

I started juggling in 1969, when I was 14 years and 9 months old in the city of Lubny, Poltava region, Ukraine, under the guidance of the legendary A.P. Gruzin. First, plastic balls came up for me, which were filled with sand up to a quarter, and then, already in the Kyiv studio, I changed the sand to semolina. In 1971, I entered the Kyiv school where I studied for two years. For ten years I juggled various objects.

5 balls

I try to juggle combinations to the rhythm of 3 balls. I start a five-ball combo with a tempo run. I follow a series of tricks: I throw the balls with a 180-degree body rotation, throws behind the back, high throws with bounces under the pattern and switch to half cascades. After that, I perform a half cascade with both hands, throws from behind, 2 curly cascades with pirouettes. The following combination, which is usually performed with 3 balls in a crisscross pattern, with only the palms overlapping on top of the balls (the so-called “dab-scratch” trick). After that, I throw 5 balls up, do a somersault, catch them, and throw them again. So, I perform 5-6 pirouettes at a pace. I catch a ball around my neck, throw it up with my neck, collect all 5 balls in my right palm and throw them behind my back. I grab four balls with my hands, grab the fifth with my leg, then throw the ball down, do a flip, then switch to the usual five-ball juggling. I finish the combination with a juggling joke: I throw 1 ball, I make a sign with my finger and, without looking, I catch it from behind.

6 balls

With 6 balls I perform the usual fountain, moving to the fountain in pairs advancing in a shower with lateral bounces. After that, I switch to synchronous juggling, and then there’s a “two-handed half-shower” trick. In the following combination: one ball is thrown up, at that moment five balls are thrown lower, when the high ball returns, another ball is thrown, five balls are also thrown low. This combination is repeated several times. Without stopping juggling, a ball is thrown higher and in the resulting pause 6 balls were placed in a path.

8 ball

I add 2 more balls. The resulting path of 8 balls began to alternately rise from the ground with the feet. Having picked up all eight balls, I went on to juggle in pairs. I then did behind-the-back throws with just the right hand, and then tricks followed: throwing 4 balls up and doing a trick. This combination was repeated several times. After that, I performed a double half cascade in pairs (crossovers). The next combination is to juggle in pairs of four balls to the sides.

10 balls

10 rehearsed balls from 1976 to the fall of 1978, until I felt I could shoot them with confidence for a minute. But my main goal was not 10, but 14 balls. Therefore, 10 balls were just a preparation for 14 balls in pairs. Shooting all the balls from your hands is just unrealistic. I have been looking for ways to do this. Four balls in the hands did not fit in any way. So, I glued clothes buttons to these balls and attached them to my pants. The idea was this: juggling ten balls at a fast pace, it was necessary to throw them to a higher level, in the resulting pause, take four balls fastened to the pants and join them to the general pattern.

But from December 1978 I started to have health problems, so I inserted 10 balls in my act, depending on how I felt. For the first time I put 10 balls into operation in Kaunas in November 1978. Later there were tours in Kyiv, Leningrad, Poland.

I heard that V. Kuzmenko was the first to insert 10 balls on stage, I was the second, and A. Brezitsky was the third.

12 balls

In practice, I juggled 12 balls in multiplex, in August 1978, with one hand I juggled 8 times in pairs. There are 16 two-handed tosses.

Now, after the lapse, I understand that I spent a lot of time and effort searching and exhausting records. At 18, I was juggling seven balls. I put a lot of time, energy, and effort into mastering big balls, clubs, and rings. If I could start all over again, I would organize my essays with more purpose. I would spend all my rehearsals juggling balls using my juggling system. In addition to juggling rehearsals, I would have rehearsals with an athletic trainer.

To conclude, I want to thank the great juggling masters who showed and transmitted to us, students of the kyiv Circus Studio, the classical school of juggling. These are A. N. Kiss, S. Ignatov, E. Bilyauer, B. Filipenko and, personally, for me, V. Chernov.

Juggler training process system

This system consists of simple things, at first glance. For some reason, it is unusual for jugglers to take examples from athletes, which, in turn, does not have a very positive effect on their results. But a good juggler, like an athlete, needs strength and endurance. For beginning jugglers (ages 10-17) who want to perform complex combinations and juggle a large number of objects in the future, I would recommend, like in sports, to give more versatile workouts. These are juggling, acrobatics, racing, strength exercises. As they say, “the healthiest athlete is a well-rounded athlete.” Already from the age of 17-18, he can carry out more unilateral loads, since juggling only develops reaction and coordination.

A big drawback is when we practice the same number of hours on each rehearsal, and even after the tempo load, the object falls to the ground and the juggler rests. And so, for the test hundreds of times, which reduces the physical activity of the body. In order to somehow avoid this, I would like to turn to the experience of ancient Greek and Soviet scientists from the city of Rostov, who created “activation therapy” and I advise you to build essays in this way:

Monday: 4 hours of regular rehearsal + 10-20 minutes of strength training.

Tuesday: 45 minutes in the morning of aerobic training (it is possible at 7 am at home), in the afternoon (it is possible at 11 am in the gym) 2 hours to rehearse only new combinations (the number of objects and combinations that do not turn out well).

Wednesday: 5 hours of regular rehearsal + 10-20 min of strength exercises.

Thursday: 45 minutes in the morning of aerobic training (possible at 7 am at home), in the afternoon (possible from 11 am in the gym) 2 hours to rehearse only new combinations (the number of objects and combinations that do not come out well).

Friday: 5 hours of regular rehearsal + 10-20 minutes of strength training.

Saturday is the same as Tuesday and Thursday, and we rehearse the new one for only 1 hour.

Each practitioner must choose the load for himself, but in my opinion, the above chart shows the normal load for jugglers aged 18-30. For young people under 18 years – half the time of classes. Every year you have to change the load. For example, increase each session by 10 minutes. After another year of aerobic training, you need to pick up the pace. In the third year – change training places: on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday only new combinations (on Monday – aerobic 1 hour and only new combinations – 3 hours, Wednesday, and Friday – 1 hour aerobic and 4 hours 30 minutes only new combinations). In year four, cut back on strength exercises (if you want, you can skip them completely), but add 20 minutes to the “new combinations only” rehearsal. All these additions to the load, changing the rhythm of the juggling and rearranging the rehearsals should be more psychological so as not to go in cycles. The main physical load grows with the annual mastery of new juggling tricks and the increase in the number of elements.

If the new combinations are not well mastered, then it is necessary to eliminate the “new combinations only” trials, replacing them with regular training, where we rehearse old and new combinations as usual.

Mikhail Rudenko.

What is aerobic training?

This is when, without stopping (without a break), simple combinations with three balls (or other accessories) are made for 20-25 minutes; with four balls – 10-15 minutes; with five balls with a single run – 5-7 minutes. If during juggling your arms and shoulders get tired and numb, then it is enough to put down the props and immediately (without a break) walk briskly for a minute or two. Then, also without stopping, keep juggling. You need to juggle at a slow pace, doing the simplest combinations such as half cascade, cascade, from behind, and hand placement exercises.

What gives us that formation?

Keep the old combinations in shape, get a load that is healthy for your health, at the same time exercise at school – fit hands (for 45 minutes, constantly monitor the body and hands), develop juggling, so to speak, resistance.

Somehow, in the 80s, I did an experiment: I juggled every day for 45-50 minutes only aerobically for 3 months. After that I did all the hard 6, 7, 8, 10 ball tricks with great ease and without falling over. For my part, I came to the conclusion that it is not necessary to repeat the combinations that you can do every day, doing the same thing. Just keep your muscles in shape. I think this is the way to keep fit in mature jugglers. On the days of evening performances in the morning, it is enough to do aerobic exercise for 45-50 minutes. I did this often and at home, dispensing with a gym, I could only walk: I raised my legs from the floor by 20 cm or walked in a figure eight, juggling 5 balls on my knees. If you do not want to do such an aerobic exercise, you can train as usual every day of the week, only during classes at this time on Monday do medium loading, and on Wednesday and Friday – higher. If you wish, on these days you can add strength exercises, balance with your own weight (10-20 minutes of push-ups, pull-ups, etc.), and then perform stretching exercises.

About variety

Home conditions: I mean a small area of the apartment and a low ceiling, so I juggled 5 balls on my knees. Juggling on your knees is also a good exercise that improves throwing accuracy. For gyms I offer movement coordination exercises. In aerobic training, this is running, juggling any number of objects, but five is better.

Also, for aerobic training, I want to share hands-on exercises. In the 70s, there was such an exercise: juggling three objects at a height of 3-4 meters, bending the arms at the elbows so that the arm is straight. This exercise did little for me. I began to develop it by swinging my arms on the principle of a pendulum, relaxed and straight, as far back as possible. Then I did an exercise imitating throws behind the back (I put my hands behind my back, but I did not throw objects behind my back, but returned them to their original position). Such lags of the arms below and behind the back made it possible to feel the extension of the arms at the elbows. All these exercises – juggling, running, knee juggling, high throws, rhythm juggling, holding hands behind your back – help to loosen up and relax more. For example, watch a juggler juggling from an angle.

Loads

Once again, I return to the loads. I suggest doing maximum loads on Tuesday and Friday. Let’s say, in the second year of training according to this system, you can lower the load on average on Wednesday, and make Tuesday and Friday have a peak load.

I also mention the case where training “only new combinations” is not suitable for someone (say, new combinations are poorly absorbed). Then you can try the usual workouts in this version:

Monday: 4 hours of regular rehearsal.

Tuesday: 50 min aerobic training and 4 hours of regular training.

Wednesday: 50 min aerobic training and 2 hours of regular training.

Thursday: 4 hours of regular training.

Friday: 50 min aerobic and 4 hours normal.

Saturday: 2 hours of regular training.

For “mature jugglers” who need to keep fit and only rehearse aerobically (you can rehearse every other day). The time is like this:

Monday: 55 min.

Tuesday: 1 hour 10 minutes.

Wednesday: 50 min.

Thursday: 50 min.

Friday: 1 hour 10 minutes

Saturday: 45 min.

I remind you that walking in this training is not a rest, but a change of load. Regarding physical activity, 1 hour of aerobic training is approximately equivalent to the load we carry out by walking 6 km in one hour. And the benefits for the body are the same as we get from walking. I think that for jugglers who are already older, such loads are perfect.

It is necessary to go out to all physical activities (the same applies to juggling combinations, as well as the number of objects) gradually, allowing the body to adapt to them. For example, my mistake was that, not really knowing how to juggle six objects, I already tried seven balls.

The same loads cannot be done every day plus the same number of hours. The activation of the body mentioned above is lost and we begin to tire of this load. This is even taught in the institutes of ordinary physical education teachers, and we rehearsed in art at the level of the Stone Age. Of course, in sports, there is a more subtle and professional approach to training systems.

For example, the same athletes take the loads described above (sprint, (aerobic), power) and systematically, in their correct combination, develop leg speed. And his foot speed is our hand speed. So, we sprinters should pay attention to this. I think this system is in any case better than what we have tried before.

I tried to stay away from the grueling eight-hour rehearsals while keeping the high results we get from the same 7–8-hour rehearsals. It may not suit everyone, as they say, what suits one may not suit another, but I still decided to share my experience.

In a nutshell, I would like to touch on the subject. There is a trend among some young jugglers “why do I need gimmicks; I’ll go out according to the director’s production.” As you know, a good number in a harmonious combination consists of such links as: new original combinations, complex tricks, the skill of the actor of the performer himself, the production of a good director. If at least one link goes down, the number loses a lot. For example, the “trick” of Majesty from her falls (a trick does not have to be performed with a large number of objects, it can be performed with one object) and such a juggler among ordinary jugglers is already considered inferior.

Another issue that worries almost all jugglers is unemployment. Here one could borrow the recommendations of Western psychologists: “When a person juggles, along with this there is also a psychological discharge” (Izvestia newspaper for 90 years). When a person focuses on catching an object, all other everyday problems vanish. In the West, in the 80s and 90s, it was popular: there were juggling clubs, which were attended by everyone, from a businessman to a worker. The same can be implemented in Ukraine. If not to open a club, at least offer health centers to juggle their health programs. It will also be, although small, but a method of popularizing juggling.
