Marium Akther was a hula hoop activist, athlete and Pakistani cultural manager. Her legacy was and will be inspiration for future generations of hula. Marium’s history is not well known. Few people know about Akther’s achievements. Her life, before the tragic event that took away her happiness, was full of triumphs and joys. Here is a little summary of Marium’s life.
Mairum Akther was born in Karachi, Pakistan. Her father, Jawed Akther, who has an ear disability, taught her to turn the large ring around her waist when she was six years old. He also instilled in him the practice of various sports; therefore, Marium won several sports competitions. Similarly, she participated in the Pakistan National Games, where she obtained a couple of trophies.

Marium’s training with the hula hoop became more arduous, and she began to dominate hula competitions. She decided to start a project with her father: teaching hula hooping to girls, adolescents, and women of Pakistan. The Akther are a family of limited resources and they did not have the resources to buy the equipment for teaching. Thanks to donations and the work of Jawer Akther, they were able to raise money to buy thousands of hulas. In total, they were able to teach 4,000 women to play hula hoop. The project continues to this day.
At 17, Marium married an 18-year-old man and they both moved to the husband’s house. She contracted Lupus (a chronic disease that affects the kidneys and the muscular system). This disease has no cure, but you can survive with treatment. Jawer Akther sent Marium’s husband the required $5,000 for her daughter’s medications, but he turned them down. According to Jawed, he mistreated her, would not let her out, and left her to die at home.

The artistic group Hulero Callejero, from the city of Medellín, Colombia, decided to hold an event in commemoration of Marium’s extraordinary legacy. The tribute lasted a week. We started with some questions for the jugglers community: What is stopping you? Who is going to stop them? Participants submitted their responses on video. The collection and publication of the videos was made from Monday to Saturday from June 22 to 26.
Sunday June 27 was the closing of the gala. National and international artists appeared. This is the list of artists: Fernanda Sumano (Mexico), Lina Uribe (Colombia), Kath Hoopson (Costa Rica), Thirsy Rojas (Venezuela), Luna Hoops (Ecuador), Christine Villafuente (United States). The panelists were: Alejandra Giraldo and Jaiki Diuma, and Andrés Vásquez “Amangualado” (The three from Colombia) presented.

The commemorative event is expected to be held each year, with a goal of continuing Marium’s legacy and keeping her memory alive. Her life will be the inspiration for all artists.

Marium Akther fue activista del Hula Hoop, deportista y gestora cultural pakistaní. Su legado fue y será inspiración para las futuras generaciones del Hula. La historia de Marium no es muy conocida. Pocas personas conocemos los logros de Akther. Su vida, antes del trágico hecho que le arrebató su felicidad, estuvo llena de triunfos y alegrías. Aquí un pequeño resumen de la vida de Marium.
Mairum Akther nació en Karachi, Pakistán. Su padre, Jawed Akther, que sufre una discapacidad en el oído, le enseñó a girar el aro grande en la cintura cuando tenía seis años. También le inculcó la práctica de varios deportes; así, Marium ganó varias competencias deportivas. De igual manera, participó en los Juego Nacionales de Pakistán, donde obtuvo un par de trofeos.

Los entrenamientos con el hula se tornaron más arduos, logrando que Marium dominara el hula. Decidió emprender un proyecto junto a su padre: enseñar hula a las niñas, adolescentes y mujeres de Pakistán. Los Akther son una familia de escasos recursos, no tenían cómo comprar los instrumentos para la enseñanza. Gracias a donaciones y al trabajo de Jawer Akther, pudieron recolectar dinero para comprar miles de hulas. En total, pudieron enseñar a jugar aro a 4.000 mujeres. El proyecto se mantiene hasta el día de hoy.
A los 17 años, Marium se casa con un hombre de 18 años. Ambos se trasladan a la casa del esposo. Ella contrae Lupus (enfermedad crónica que afecta los riñones y el sistema muscular). Ese padecimiento no tiene cura, pero se puede vivir con un buen tratamiento. Jawer Akther envió al esposo de Marium 5.000 dólares para los medicamentos de su hija, pero él los rechazó. Según Jawed, él la maltrataba, no la dejaba salir y la dejó morir en la casa.

Inició con unas preguntas para la comunidad de los malabaristas: ¿Que te detiene? ¿Quién los va a detener? Los participantes enviaban sus respuestas en vídeo. La recolección y publicación de los videos se hizo de lunes a sábado del 22 al 26 de junio.
El domingo 27 de junio fue el cierre de la gala. Se presentaron artistas nacionales e internacionales.
