After my article about the collection of photos of the Soviet duo Vita and Sigmund Černiauskas, I was able to find biographical and artistic data of the couple.
Sigmund was born as Zigmundas Černiauskas, on May 22, 1933, in Riga, Latvia. His mother, Otilija Kaluževičienė (July 9, 1912 – September 17, 2007) was an acrobat, aerial gymnast, and circus performer. Zigmund’s father, Pranas Černiauskas, (1901 – September 15, 1937), was an aerial acrobat. The couple saved up and bought some trucks, some tents and other materials to start a circus.
Sigmund began performing in the circus arena at the age of two, alongside his father. He said so in an interview: “From the age of two, my parents began to prepare me for circus activities: they carried me on the head, they lifted me up by the hand…”

Sadly, Pranas died in an accident at the circus when Sigmund was three years old. After the death of her husband, Otilija sold the circus. Later, she met Kazis Kalužević, an acrobat, aerial gymnast and power juggler from the circus “Karad,” whom she married, and who continued to train Sigmund.

Vita Gineikaite was born on September 11, 1930, in Kaunas, Lithuania. She was related to the circus artist Alfonso Gineikas. She met Sigmund probably in 1943, when Alfonso Gineikas took him to the circus. Both had created an almost identical ladder act, but it was after seeing Alexander and Violetta Kiss, in 1947, that they decided to be jugglers-tightrope walkers, and surpass the artists who inspired them.
So, they created a juggling and balancing act. At first, Sigmund would ride a tall unicycle and juggle eight rings while he balanced a stick. Wanting to add acrobatics to the show, they swapped the unicycle for ladders, giving them more freedom. Thus, in 1949, one of the most important circus duos in Lithuania was born, and one of the most emblematic in the entire Soviet Union.
After an extraordinary tour with the Tsvetnoi Boulevard Circus in Moscow, Sigmund dedicated the following words: “Such an endless search for perfection, the realization that talent is from God, but God commanded man to work, is rare even in the circus. For Vita and Sigmund Černiauskas, this is everyday life.”

After battling a serious illness, Vita passed away on June 10, 2010. Sigmund died on September 4, 2018, at the age of 85. Both were buried in Kaunas, Lithuania.

Luego de mi artículo sobre la colección de fotos del dúo soviético Vita y Sigmund Černiauskas, pude encontrar datos biográficos y artísticos de la pareja.
Sigmund nació como Zigmundas Černiauskas, el 22 de mayo de 1933, en Riga, Letonia. Su madre, Otilija Kaluževičienė (9 de julio de 1912 – 17 de septiembre de 2007) fue una acróbata, gimnasta aérea y artista de circo. El padre de Sigmund, Pranas Černiauskas, (1901 – 15 de septiembre de 1937), fue un acróbata aéreo. La pareja ahorró y compraron algunos camiones, unas carpas y otros materiales para formar un circo.
Sigmund empezó a actuar en la arena del circo a los dos años, junto a su padre. Así lo dijo en una entrevista: “Desde los dos años, mis padres empezaron a prepararme para las actividades circenses: me llevaban en la cabeza, me levantaban cogido de una mano…”.

Tiempo después, conoció a Kazis Kalužević, un acróbata, gimnasta aéreo y malabarista de poder del circo “Karad”, con quien se casó, y quien continúo entrenando a Sigmund.

Entonces, crearon un acto de malabarismo y equilibrio. Al principio, Sigmund se subía aun monociclo alto y hacía malabares con ocho aros mientras equilibraba un palo. Al querer agregar acrobacia al espectáculo, cambiaron el monociclo por escaleras, lo que les daba más libertad. Así, en 1949, nació uno de los dúos circenses más importantes de Lituania, y de los más emblemáticos de toda la Unión Soviética.
Luego de una gira extraordinaria con el Tsvetnoi Boulevard Circus de Moscú, Sigmund dedicó las siguientes palabras: “Tal búsqueda interminable de la perfección, la comprensión de que el talento es de Dios, pero Dios ordenó al hombre que trabaje, es raro incluso en el circo. Para Vita y Sigmund Černiauskas, esto es la vida cotidiana.”

Tras luchar contra una grave enfermedad, Vita falleció el 10 de junio de 2010. Sigmund murió el 04 de septiembre de 2018, a los 85 años. Ambos fueron enterrados en Kaunas, Lituania.
