Reaching 100 years old is truly a feat. The oldest living person in the world is Maria Branyas Morenas, who is 116 years old.
In the juggling community there are also artists who have reached the age of 100 or more. Let’s see who they are.
Angelo Picinelli
He came into the world on November 3, 1921. His parents were Francesco and Luigia Pellerino, both circus artists. Francesco had an act of force and called himself Nino. Fulvio, his older brother, was a tightrope walker who worked alongside Enrico Rastelli.
Angelo decided to be a juggler. By the early 1920s, Rastelli was the most recognized juggler in the world. Therefore, he was Piccinelli’s first inspiration. And the games of life helped him: Rastelli, through correspondence and with Fulvio taking the homework to his brother, taught Angelo because he was ten years old when Rastelli died.
At the age of 15, Angelo worked at the Cirque Medrano in Paris. From there, he jumped to the most famous circuses and theaters in Europe, such as the Wintergarten in Berlin, China Teatern in Stockholm, the Pasapoga in Spain, the Palladium and the Savoy Hotel, the Prince of Wales, among many others.
He married the Italian circus artist, actress and singer Liana Orfei (of the Orfei circus) in Naples, in 1956. They were married at a circus party, specifically in a cage of lions. Cristina Orfei was born from the marriage.
Piccinelli was one of the first jugglers to use rings as we know them today. He was able to juggle six rings as he balanced on a pedestal and jumped rope and twirled a ring on his ankle. Also, he managed to juggle eight rings and is considered one of the best jugglers Italy has ever had.
Angelo went to see Adolf Hitler. Also, the spectacle of him was enjoyed by Winston Churchill, King Edward VIII, Grace Kelly, Maria Callas. “Twice Hitler came to see me when I was working at the Apollo in Nuremberg and at La Scala in Berlin. In London, Winston Churchill; at the Lido in Paris, King Edward VIII; at the Club Méditerranée in Monte Carlo, Grace Kelly; and Ranieri, Onassis, Maria Callas, and her husband Giovanni Meneghini,” Angelo comments professionally.
Angelo says that Francis Brunn copied his act called “Brunn Finish,” adding: “He copied me a lot, but then it had changed, the pure juggling that he did had also eliminated it because it was very difficult, and he favored exercises with the ball.” And then he added that Brunn had improved his trick.
He inspired Italian jugglers Alberto Sforzi, Nando Orfei, Luciano Bello. Likewise, he was an inspiration for many jugglers of the 40s, 50s and 60s. He retired from the stage shortly after acting in the films “Guardatele ma non toccatele” and “Trapezium” where he acted as himself. And with calm and satisfaction, he says: “I prefer that the public remembers Angelo Piccinelli and not a draft.”

Señor Wences
He was born with the name of Wenceslao Moreno Centeno, on April 17, 1896, in Peñaranda de Bracamonte, Province of Salamanca, Castilla y León, Spain. His parents were Antonio Moreno Ross and Josefa Centeno Lavera. As a child, he did impressions of the voices of his classmates who did not attend classes. As punishment, the teachers made him clean the inkwells. Then young Wences would draw eyes on his hands with the chalk and press them together to make them look like a face; then he recreated voices that he played with.
His brother, Felipe Moreno (musician and artist), taught him the art of ventriloquism and with whom he would form a duo with which he would perform in circuses in Salamanca.
But his career with the public began at the age of 15, in bullfights. After making several exhibitions, Wences was gored by a bull. The doctor told him that his arm needed rehabilitation. So, he started juggling. Later, together with two friends, he joined a local circus, where he learned other juggling disciplines.
Wences was able to develop stage techniques that led him to build ventriloquism and juggling routines. Since 1920, his name headed the headlines of the main theaters and circuses, such as Circus Price, where he worked for a couple of years.
Wences arrived in New York in 1934, where he performed at the Club Chico in Greenwich Village. He was able to make appearances for the King of England, the King of Egypt, and for different presidents of the United States.
He participated in World War II, in the United States Armed Forces, where he combined combat with cheering on Army troops with juggling and ventriloquism performances.
Wence’s television debut was in 1948, when he went public with his character “Johnny.” Since then, his fame has spread throughout the world of entertainment and varieties, acting for the famous Ed Sullivan show, with whom he was in 48 shows of ten minutes each.
Wences passed away on April 20, 1999, at the age of 103, in New York. That city erected a blue sign next to the Ed Sullivan Theater designating one block of West 54th Street, from Eighth Avenue to Broadway, as Mr. Wences Way. Likewise, the city of Salamanca granted a street named after him.

Entonces, comenzó a hacer malabares. Luego, junto a dos amigos, se unió a un circo local, donde aprendió algunas disciplinas de malabares.
Wences pudo desarrollar técnicas escénicas que lo llevaron a construir rutinas de ventriloquia y malabares. Desde 1920, su nombre encabezaba los titulares de los principales teatros y circos, como el Circo Price, donde trabajó un par de años.
Wences llegó a Nueva York en el año 1934, donde actuó en el Club Chico en Greenwich Village. Pudo hacer presentaciones para el Rey de Inglaterra, el Rey de Egipto, y para diferentes presidentes de los Estados Unidos.
